Stanley-Boyd finished its regular season with a 5-2 record in the Cloverbelt Conference after a thrilling 27-20 win at Mondovi Friday night.
The Orioles finished third in the conference behind 5-0 Regis, which had its season shortened because of the pandemic and 5-1 Durand.
The Orioles now play a familiar foe in Level 1 of the WIAA playoffs. S-B plays at Colby at 7 p.m. The Hornets had a great first year out of the Cloverbelt, finishing with a 5-0 record. There’s only two weeks of playoff football this season, so the winner of the game plays either Spencer/Columbus or Cumberland the following week as Regional champions will be crowned.
Against Mondovi, the Orioles jumped out to a 16-0 halftime lead but Mondovi stormed back in the third quarter and took a 20-19 lead. In the fourth quarter, Carsen Hause found Mike Karlen for a 12-yard touchdown. Then Hause ran for a two-point conversion to provide the margin of victory.
Stanley-Boyd then was able to stop Mondovi on a final drive to secure the victory.
Karlen kicked two field goals in the game, and the Orioles got touchdowns in the second quarter by Cooper Nichols and Hause in the second quarter.
Hause completed 13-20 passes for 140 yards with a pair of touchdown strikes.
The Oriole ground game was led by Jake Nesterick with 64 yards rushing and Karlen with 56. Karlen caught four passes for 45 yards, and Nichols and Nesterick each caught three. Lucas Smith had two catches for 27 yards, and Carter Vait had one reception.
Cooper Nichols returned two Mondovi kicks on the night for 65 yards to help set up the S-B offense.
