Start of season shows promise for Orange and Black in coming year
The best place to be Friday August 20 at the match up between Stanley-Boyd and Cadott?
Just about anywhere the Orioles were headed, end zone wise. With a 51-0 victory over the Hornets the Orange and Black showed itself up to the task of taking on Cadott, while head coach Jeff Koenig gave his opinion of what went right and where the Orioles still needed to work on improvement in the weeks and months to come to shine.
“I was happy the team was able to play solid defense and make some explosive plays,” Koenig said of the Orioles performance. “It makes for an exciting game.”
As to competition, Koenig said that the Oriole defense played well and that this needed to continue, while offense “had some struggles moving the ball consistently.”
“The big plays covered that up but we need to work better on our assignments and execution,” Coach Koenig said. “We also need to play with a much lower pad level. We need to focus on improving each day in practice,” Koenig said.
As to the game itself, the first touchdown for the Orioles came with Mikey Karlen catching a pass from Cooper Nichols downfield and taking it to the end zone. From there things didn’t let up, though the initial extra point was ruled no good.
With the Hornets receiving and returning the ball to around the 35-yard line prior to turnover, a high pass by the Oriole’s Carsen Hause to Brady Potaczek made for the second touchdown, while the third touchdown came through an interception with the extra point good to bring things 19-0 in the Orioles favor Karlen made the kickoff to the Hornets in the end zone without reception, with Cadott making a four-yard gain from the 15 to the 19-yard line on their end before another interception by the Orioles resulted in a run just short of the goal line, followed by a turnover on play to Cadott.
Another interception by Potaczek was run downfield to between the 30 and 40-yard line, followed with a first down and incomplete pass to Nichols for the Orioles.
From there Karlen carried the ball downfield, while an incomplete pass to Potaczek followed with the referee whistle resulted in a loss of 10-yards on the Oriole’s part for unsportsmanlike conduct, taking things back to the 25-yard line.
At the end of the first quarter things remained 19-0, while the end of the game saw the score 51-0 in the Oriole’s favor.
