The Stanley-Boyd varsity volleyball team put together a strong stretch of tournament play, going undefeated at the Marshfield Columbus tournament after an impressive showing that included straight-set victories over Whitehall, Durand and Ellsworth earlier in the week.
At Marshfield Columbus, the Orioles went 5-0 on their way to capturing the tournament championship.
Stanley-Boyd opened pool play against Adams-Friendship. After dropping the opening set 20-25, the Orioles responded with a 25-16 win before taking the deciding set 15-7.
The Orioles faced host Columbus Catholic in another three-set match. Columbus Catholic edged Stanley-Boyd 28-26 in the opener, but the Orioles again answered, winning the second set 25-19 and the deciding set 15-11.
Stanley-Boyd finished pool play with a sweep of Montello, 25-12 and 25-21, giving the Orioles the Pool C championship and advancing them to the tournament semifinals.
The Orioles continued their run against Colby in the semifinal, taking the match in straight sets, 25-16 and 25-19. That sent Stanley-Boyd into the championship against Chippewa Falls.
Stanley-Boyd saved one of its strongest performances for the title match, defeating Chi-Hi 25-11 and 25-19 to finish the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record and bring home the championship.
The Orioles carried their strong play into their next competition, sweeping all three opponents. Stanley-Boyd defeated Whitehall 25-12, 25-10; Durand 25-19, 25-13; and Ellsworth 25-7, 25-15.
The team credited its serving as a major factor in the successful outing.
“We played very well as a team and had a lot of great things going for us,” head coach Karley Wiensch said. “Our serving was spot on and kept our opponents out of system most of the sets we played.”
The day also included a career milestone for Kelly Lew. Lew recorded her 1,000th career dig during the first set of Stanley-Boyd’s match against Whitehall.
The tournament results continued a strong early-season run for the Orioles, highlighted by consistent serving, straight-set victories and the Marshfield Columbus tournament championship.
