The Stanley Area Historical Society will host a free presentation on 100 years of the Plombon Funeral Home in Stanley Saturday, July 19 at 2:00 p.m. The only business to reach 100 years in Stanley, the presentation will also include other funeral service history.
“I will be talking about even before Stanley was a town how they did funerals and how things changed,” Betty Plombon shared of the July 19 presentation at the historical society.
With road construction currently ongoing along West Maple as well as Helgerson Streets, parking for the July 19 presentation will be in the nearby bank and Full Gospel Mission Church parking lots, as well as along the road that extends behind the Historical Society off West Oak Street.
Once home to many funeral directors, Stanley Wisconsin saw the arrival in 1925 of Vincent and Maryanna (Wisniewski) Plombon from Foley, Minnesota, along with their 10 kids. Vincent Plombon spoke multiple languages, something which helped in a town that had many first generation immigrants. The Plombon family soon came to serve the entire community as other funeral directors bowed out.
As was common at the time, the Plombon family also operated a furniture store business, before the two businesses split. A funeral home was purchased in the 1930s on North Broadway at Fifth Avenue, being remodeled over the years.
The business now 100 years old, several family members have served as funeral directors over the years. Included among them have been Vincent Plombon (1918-1930), Severyn Plombon (1930-1978), Bill Plombon (1959-2000), Keith Plombon (1971-2010), and Dan Plombon (1994 - today). Other family members who have received their license for funeral direction over the years included Gen Plombon (1954-1978) and David Plombon (1983-2021).
Covering over 100 years, the Saturday presentation will have members of the Plombon family present to answer questions and take place in the historical society presentation room. A new historical display on area funeral services will also be shown. All are welcome.
