Homecoming week at Cornell was celebrated October 4-10. A picture of the homecoming court will long be remembered as the court consisted of seven seniors and they all were pictured with their masks. +++ Cornell will hold a Halloween Trunk-or Treat event in Mill Yard Park on Saturday, October 31, from 3-4 pm. Neighborhood Trick or Treat will take place from 3-6 pm. Mask wearing is strongly encouraged by those handing out candy or other treats. +++ Groundbreaking could be coming soon for a Veterans Memorial at Holcombe. The cost of engaging an engineering firm is being explored.+++ The Cadott Community Association held a Bingo, September 13, at East Riverview Park. During the event free root beer floats, made with cups of custard donated by Culver’s, were distributed. ++ Forty freshman-seniors are on the Cadott football roster this year.

Courtesy Auto made a formal announcement in the Courier of the relocation of its Ford dealership to the former Shopko Building in Stanley. The article noted that renovation has begun and it is anticipated that the new Courtesy Auto facility will open in the spring of 2021. The decision to relocate was made after extensive study and analysis of possible improvements at the current site. The assistance of Ford Motor Company was provided in determining that the present site would not support the opportunity for future expansion outside the current footprint and thus leaving the facility with little future growth potential. Alternate sites were explored and it was determined that the Shopko building along Highway 29 gave the best exposure, square footage and an overall good fit for the projected revisions that were being considered.

On Thursday, September 24, Bloomer High School students involved in the Bloomer FFA drove their tractors to school. “There is nothing normal about this year, so BHS students decided to do Bring Your Tractor To School Day early because … you just don’t know what the rest of the school year holds.”

Owen-Withee Schools and the City of Owen have received a grant to build an addition on their school. The FEMA Grant would provide a safe haven for local residents in the event of a tornado. The structure would be 125 feet in diameter and a total of 12,000 sq. ft. A question was asked at a recent referendum meeting. Why a dome shaped building? The answer provided was that a dome is 20% less expensive to build and angular buildings have wind issues, updraft concerns and other issues. Wind forces bend around a dome structure and domes also provide more value per sq. ft. +++ The Greenwood School Board at a special meeting approved updated athletic attendance guidelines. For football, each athlete will received 4 tickets per game and 4 tickets for visitors. For volleyball, each player will get 4 tickets per game and 2 tickets for visitors. Only students grades 9-12 will be allowed to attend without a parent and all spectators MUST wear masks.

A consulting firm has indicated that an upgrade of the Clark County Courthouse security, and dealing with access issues, will cost upwards of $1 million. County officials are looking at an entrance remodeling and enhancement plans that could be included in the 2021 budget. +++ Colby is looking at borrowing money, Tri-County News Two persons were in Eau Claire Criminal Court last week on various felony and misdemeanor charges of possession and trafficking drugs from a home located in Fall Creek. Neighbor complaints about the residence, reportedly due to the constant number of people coming and going, launched an investigation from the Fall Creek Police Department. +++ The Trempealeau County Health Department is advising anyone who was at the Nacho Cheese Fest in Blair, during the dates of September 18, 19, and 20, that they should consider themselves at medium risk exposure for COVID-19. The Health Department is investigating those who are at high risk and they will be contacted. Those who attended are encouraged to stay home and visit a doctor if they are experiencing any COVID symptoms.

The efforts of the Mondovi Public Library to raise funds for a new, more spacious library facility took a big step forward last week with a major donation. Representatives of Mayo Clinic Health System visited the library on Monday, September 21, to present a check for $100,000 to the library building fund. The new library is expected to cost about $1.4 million. With recent donations the total raised is $480,000, which is about a third of the goal.

Enrollment in the Black River Falls School Districts virtual at home learning program is around 35 percent Pre-kindergarten through 5th grade (281 out of 790 elementary students). At the sixth grade through eighth grade about 30.9 % are in the virtual program (121 students out of 391 middle school students). At the high school level about 26.11% are enrolled in the virtual program (129 out of 494 high school students). About 2% of all students in the Black River Falls District have not been participating in learning in any way. Although enrolled they have not chosen to participate in the virtual program or face-to-face and have not attended physically.
Trempealeau County Times
By a vote of 13-4, the Trempealeau County Board has again rejected the hiring of a county administrator. Just over three years ago the same proposal failed by a vote of 11-6. +++ Arcadia Schools have gone to virtual teaching until October 12. This was the decision after nine students tested positive and 150 other students had been quarantined because of close contact on the bus and in the classroom. Twenty staff members have also been quarantined but none tested positive. +++ The Trempealeau County Board has again voted to borrow $5 million to reconstruct crumbling roads.
