Food, fun, spectacle—even life advice. You name it, the Stanley Rodeo had it.

Opening Thursday June 15 with the crowning of Miss Stanley and court at the Theater, the gates to the Rodeo performance opened Friday night. With a long line of those holding rebought tickets making their way in as of 6 p.m. along with those buying for the night, it was a packed stadium when things got under way after 7 p.m.

With an opening prayer by the announcer and the the Stanley-Boyd FFA unfurling the flag to start the show, before long it was into the rodeo. First up, bareback riding!

Among those competing at this year’s rodeo were two world champions, one past, the other defending. With prize money on the line, winners were determined on performance from both Friday and Saturday nights. Following bareback riding the competition went through cattle roping, saddleback, barrel racing, and bull riding.  In between performances, the rodeo clown provided some life advice—and dancing skills.

To all the young men out there, let me tell you something,” he shared. “No girl wants to sit on the outside of a dance, I guarantee it.” Breaking into a performance with several decades worth of dance tunes, the rodeo clown showed he still had the moves.

As in years past the Legion/VFW put on a 50/50 raffle, while a Cowboy Breakfast was served by volunteers Friday and Saturday morning, also as in years past. Saturday saw a pedal tractor pull and a parade, the latter lasting 45 minutes and extending down Broadway. With many repeat entries, this year’s parade saw floats for Miss Stanley, Miss Boyd, Miss Cadott, and Miss Thorp, as well as the high school band, fire and police, and local businesses.

Sunday morning, it was cowboy church at the bandstand, while the Stanley Rod and Gun Club put on a charcoal chicken dinner using the new cooking area roof. Sunday afternoon there was an old-fashioned horse pull, with teams of draft horses pulling a sledge with concrete blocks, before being auctioned off. And just like that the Rodeo was over—until next year.
