First high school competitions April 27

It may be the regular season already in the Major Leagues, but for baseball at Stanley- Boyd, practice starts on April 19—as it does for softball and track. S-B Athletics Director Travis Schindler had more to share on how everything is supposed to work when practice begins.

“Students can join and come out…but they should check with the head coaches of those sports to make sure they have all the required paperwork to participate,” Schindler said of the soon opening season, with practice starting Monday April 19. As to America’s pastime, Schindler said that, “We have a full JV Baseball team this year. In other years we could play on off nights from varsity but they have really big numbers and need to get some games,” he said. The JV will be using the Chapman Park ballfield this summer, in an agreement with the city for five games on the west side of town.

Additionally for sports, Schindler said that track meets had new requirements and procedures to adhere to from the WIAA, while the vast number of pages made these hard to summarize “quickly,” he said. Overall, the season was hopeful.

“WE have been running contact days since Winter sports ended and kids seem excited to start the season,” Schindler said of spring, with track, baseball, and softball soon to come. “We hope for good weather like every Spring and look forward to seeing kids participate.”

With April 19 the WIAA-designated “earliest day for practice” as regards baseball, softball, track and field, (but also boys golf), the earliest allowed day of competition for local spring sports is April 27. For preview pictures and a full listing of the coming week, see below.

Braving temperatures in the upper thirties to low forties, Stanley-Boyd Spring athletes honed their ball-playing skills and took part in a baton relay Monday April 19.
