SB beats Loyal in triple match play, takes mixed results from Merrill tournament on Saturday

“We played solid defense tonight and served strong. We play a very tough tournament at Merrill on Saturday, so we will need to continue work on our game speed and offense,” Stanley-Boyd Volleyball coach Rainy Antolak shared of match play at Loyal. Coming off competition Tuesday, September 7, the set match scores against Loyal were 25 – 13, 25 – 9, and 25 – 10, all in the Oriole’s favor.

As to stat leaders for the Loyal match, Antolak shared that Emily Brenner had 17 kills with six serving aces and nine digs, while Lily Hoel racked up 11 kills and four blocks. Kayte Licht six kills and seven digs against Loyal, while Tina Benson had nine digs. Leslie Derks had 20 assists, while Kaden Drehmel had 10 of the same.

From Loyal, it was on to a volleyball tournament against multiple schools at Merrill on Saturday September 11.

“We went 3-1 at Merrill,” Antolak said. “In round robin we beat Merrill 2 25-9 and 25-9,” she said, clarifying that Merrill had two teams at the tournament.

“We beat Wittenberg Birnamwood 25-12 and 25-20,” Coach Antolak shared. “These wins put us into the gold bracket. We lost to Merrill varsity 16-25 and 23-25 To take 3rd place overall,” she said. “After losing to Merrill, we went on to beat Tomahawk 2-0 set scores 25-5 and 25-19 to take 3rd place overall,” After the scoring recount came a post-tournament analysis of the performance at Merrill Saturday.

“We served well and played strong defense throughout the day,” Antolak shared. “During the Merrill match we struggled a bit with serve receive, so we will continue to work on that in practice.”. As to stat leaders at Merrill, Antolak relayed the following: Kayte Licht had nine kills and 20 serving aces, while Emily Brenner took away 34 kills adn was named to the all-tournament team. Lily Hoel, meanwhile, had 20 kills and 13 blocks, while Avery Vait had 12 serving aces and 31 assists. So what comes next for the Oriole girls varsity volleyball team?

"This week, we see our first conference op ponent, Osseo-Fairchild,” Coach Antolak shared, clarifying that the Osseo-Fairchild match had been changed to Thursday, September 16th after initially being scheduled for Tuesday September 14.
