School Board updated on Orioles Achieve program

Appearing before the School Board March 27 after the Student Council report, English teacher Kayleigh Steinmetz updated the board on Orioles Achieve, a program meant to intervene for students that might be struggling.

With just over one year since it began, Steinmetz said that after school had been identified as a better time than morning for the program, with winter best, it having been decided to run the intervention for grades five through eight after school in January and February of next year.

As to interest, Steinmetz said that there was more interest in grades five through seven, with the possibility that fourth grade could be added as well given less interest in eighth. Run and used by the students themselves, the ratio of high school tutors to middle school students was roughly one to one, with some high schoolers using the volunteer hours to fulfill a graduation requirement, as one motivation.

Touched on prior to the Orioles Achieve update was the Student Council report, with Nick Szczech reporting that students had done the Polar Plunge in Eau Claire on March 4, raising $2,468.

Also in the student council report, Janelle Schesel reported that the blood drive was coming up Wednesday, March 29, with 48 of 52 donor slots filled.

“We’re looking forward to the turnout and we also have student council members volunteering throughout the day to greet and provide snacks,” she said of the school blood drive.
