Acting at the October regular school board meeting, the Stanley-Boyd School Board voted to approve the formation of a Clay Target Club in the district as non-school sponsored organization.
The Club would not gather on school property, and no guns or shells would be allowed on school property. Being that the club would not be sponsored by the district, no district funds would be put towards it, with the Stanley Sportsmans’ Club taking a large role, as the sport can be expensive. Stanley-Boyd Athletics Director Nick Mahr gave the details at the October meeting.
“I propose that we create a clay target club as a non-school sponsored activity,” Mahr told the school board, stating that Frank Dusick of the Stanley Sportsmans’ Club had gotten himself certified as a coach and that competitions would take place virtually, with teams competing at different trap ranges and then tallying scores. The club would be allowed to make announcements over the school public address system but would not meet on school property.
In addition, the club would be part of the USA High School Clay Target League, with Mahr proposing that the Goggle-Eye Trap Club in Thorp be chosen as the site of club practices. Included in the rationale for forming the club at Stanley-Boyd are that clay target shooting “is a safe and enjoyable activity that offers challenging competition,” the fact that other school districts had started and maintained successful trap shooting clubs, support from the Stanley Sportsmans’ Club, and that to participate in league matches students would need to be attached to a school.
School involvement would be limited to providing meeting space in the CMR and IMC, or a classroom for team meetings when needed. The club would be allowed to place posters and make announcements during school, but at no time would guns or shells be allowed on school property, including the school parking lot. Club members would be held to the same expectations as those laid out for others in the Athletic Code and Privilege Card System.
With superintendent Jeff Koenig sharing that students from Stanley-Boyd had competed at clubs in Thorp and Cadott in the past, the Clay Target Club was approved at Stanley-Boyd as non-school sponsored, the motion made by board member Chad Verbeten and seconded by Toni Seidl.
