The Stanley-Boyd Oriole Varsity Volleyball team travelled to Somerset Saturday October 9, and by the end of the day had defeated five other rivals to place first.

First up was Shell Lake, which the Oriole girls dispatched in set matches 25 – 20 and 25 – 11 respectively.

Then came Boyceville, which was answered with match wins of 25 – 12 and 25 -9 by the Orioles.

Following Boyceville in rapid succession was Somerset itself, which the Orioles dispatched in two sets of 26 – 24 and 25 – 18.

After Somerset came Elmwood/Plum City, which the Orioles triumphed over 25 – 13 and 25 – 19.

Last in Saturday’s victory parade came Ashland, which the Orioles won over in three sets, these coming out score wise 25 – 16, 22 – 25, and 15 – 10.

Among stat leaders for the day on the Orioles part were Avery Vait with 64 assists, followed by Kayden Drehmel with 40 assists. Lily Hoel got in 30 kills and 10 blocks, while Emily Brenner got in 64 kills.

Preceding the good day at Somerset for this year’s action, the Orioles faced off with Regis October 7, beating the Eau Claire private school 3 – 2 in set matches.

“We played well the first set and struggled a bit with serve reception during sets 2 and 3,” Coach Rainy Antolak said of the Oriole girls. “We refocused and came back to win sets 4 and 5.. I am proud of the team for coming from behind and winning,” she said.

Scores at the end of the day for the match with Regis were 25 – 14, 22 – 25, 20 – 25, 25 – 21, and 15 – 5.

Prior to Regis the Oriole girls lost a close five sets to Bloomer October 5 after coming from a win against Cadott September 28 in three sets. Following Saturday’s win the Orioles go into the Volleyball championship against multiple schools at McDonnell Central in Chippewa Falls Thursday evening, then if successful a regional Tuesday October 19, the details of which are to be determined.
