The Spring Election may bring some fresh faces to the Stanley City Council this April. The Apr. 2 Spring election will see positions open for Mayor, held by incumbent Al Haas, 1st and 8th Ward Alderperson, currently held by Mark Fitzsimmons, 2nd Ward Alderperson, held by Josh Siedl, 3rd Ward Alderperson, held by former Mayor, Mike Henke, and 4th through 7th and 9th Ward Alderperson, held by Holly Kitchell. The new terms will begin on Apr. 26, 2024, and last for two years.
City Council members are the heart of the city and set the tone for many of the decisions that affect our present and future. Their plans and decisions are lasting and can affect many generations. The duties of the Mayor and Council members include, representing municipal residents’ best interests, finding balance among themselves, and as the legislative branch they must make policy decisions and pass budgets. They must also take into account non-resident taxpayers and visitors. City Council meetings are held on the first and third Mondays of the month and City Council members are also assigned to three other separate committees that have required meetings at various dates.
Stanley City Clerk Nicole Pilgrim explains, “Elected officials must help each other and the public to stay focused on the future and on the common good. There may be struggles, there may be differences of opinion, but everyone needs to come together and move the agenda forward, build trust, and create a culture of mutual respect which will allow progress.”
Those who wish to be considered for the Office of Mayor are required to obtain 50 signatures, with only 20 signatures needed for individuals running for any of the four alderperson positions. Candidates must also meet the applicable age, citizenship, residency and voting qualification requirements.
Nomination papers for candidacy can be picked up and circulated on Dec. 1 but must be returned to the City Administrator by Jan. 1 before 5 p.m. The forms needed to be completed and returned are the Declaration of Candidacy; Local Candidate Registration Statement; and the Nomination paper. Any individuals interested in running for office, stop in at City Hall or email the City Clerk at npilgrim@ci.stanley.wi.gov.
