If you want to take a dip at the old Chapman Beach, that’s your choice. With no lifeguards to watch the area however, and large reptiles that have sharp beaks (turtles) among those that are known to roam beneath the lake waters, you just might consider trying out the Stanley-Boyd High School pool for a change. After all it’s much clearer, fully chlorinated, and soon to be open for business as of this July 6. With general posted weekday hours of 5:30 to 7:00 a.m. Monday thru Friday; 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. (except Wednesday and Fridays); and 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (except Friday), the Stanley-Boyd School Pool could be the place to be this summer. In addition, the pool will be open on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., per the school district’s website.
According to school maintenance head Tim Troyer, the five-day offset in pool opening from July 1st as the earliest possible date was due to a failure in heating, with a repair person coming from Chicago this past Monday, June 29. The pool will open July 6, as soon as it gets properly warmed—as this is better than a cold bath, for most people.
That being said, it might be an issue to get qualified lifeguards this year, as past employees have largely moved on and the district wasn’t able to hold its regular class (leading to a restricted job pool), but the simple fact that pool repairs were finished and the pool itself full of water was good news, by any measure.
Troyer shared during his report to the school board that the large pool was full as of the Monday meeting on June 22, and the hot tub was due to be full shortly, with an electrician and plumber both expected to be on-site when things were fully fired up. “We’ll see how it goes,” he said of the pool trials to ensure everything was working properly. With the pool alarm system now going directly to three phones, the specter of what happened before, where the alarm went off without being remedied in time, was less likely to reoccur in the future. If a pump malfunctioned, the sumps would be activated, it was stated in addition to this.
Meanwhile, the school was still disputing certain things with the insurance company as of the March meeting, and keeping corroded equipment on hand as evidence to help with these determinations. Keeping it around to get looked at, didn’t improve the condition of the hardware, but the insurance company was going to come by shortly to check on things. In the meantime, Board members Chad Verbeten had words of praise for Mr. Koenig.
“I’ll just say I appreciate the fact that Mr. Koenig, in my humble opinion, is always open,” he shared as it was moved by Verbeten and Boie to approve SL 9, finding the Superintendent in compliance with his counsel and communication expectations of the board.
