Stanley-Boyd students in 5th and 6th grade participated in the Cloverwood League, organized by the Owen-Withee Boys Varsity Basketball Coach. Teams in the league included, Altoona, Augusta, Cadott, Colby, Gilman, Granton, Greenwood, Neillsville, Owen-Withee, Rib Lake, Spencer, and Thorp. Stanley-Boyd was one of only three districts to have enough players to have two teams at the sixth-grade level and was the only district to have multiple teams participating at the fifth and sixth grade level.
Coach Matt Steinbach explained the approach to this year’s basketball season. “In addition to fundamental skills and basic plays, we introduced a lot of new drills and actions this year that we hope will better prepare the boys for higher levels. We challenged them with new and more difficult things this year and the boys showed they could handle it. They all worked hard and showed improvement from the beginning of the season.”
He shared, “We hope that the boys enjoyed the season and that we have sparked enough interest for them to continue working on basketball in the future. We encourage each of them to find time to work on individual skills throughout the year at home, at camps, and any open gym opportunities. The off-season is very important for each player's individual improvement.”
Steinbach mentioned that finding practice time was difficult this season due to lack of gym space availability but was pleased with player attendance at practices. He expressed his appreciation for the parents of the players for being flexible with the practice schedule.
Steinbach added, “I would like to extend a special thanks to Coach Mahr for her coaching assistance, Dakota Nichols for helping to organize the boys’ teams here at Stanley-Boyd, as well as everyone who helped organize/staff the host events.”
