Stanley-Boyd to have two athletic directors this year

Stanley-Boyd Athletic Director Travis Schindler tried to resign in May. District Superintendent Jeff Koenig wouldn’t accept it.

That notwithstanding, Koenig did recommend to the Stanley- Boyd School Board at its July meeting to have a split in structure of the district’s athletic director position, which recommendation was approved with a motion by Denise Hoffstatter seconded by Jeff Boie For the upcoming school year then, Nick Mahr will be co-director alongside Schindler.

During the Fall season, Schindler will oversee football and girls golf, while Mahr will oversee Volleyball and Cross Country, the latter of which he is deeply involved in.

In addition, Mahr will be handling payments generally for the district sports programs.

Come the Winter (and it will come), Schindler will handle basketball while Mahr will take care wrestling. When Spring comes (as it generally does after the cold), Schindler will be involved with baseball, softball, track, and boys golf, while Mahr will help with track meets, something he already does.

Given that Mahr is new to the athletic director position, we asked him for some thoughts on the matter.

“I will be sharing these responsibilities with Travis Schindler who has been Stanley-Boyd’s athletic director for a number of years,” Mahr said. “He and I both coach multiple sports and splitting the duties between us will allow us to better meet the needs of the school’s athletics program broadly and give attention to our individual coaching responsibilities.” Mahr also explained what an athletic director does and how he will be helping Schindler.

“The athletic director’s responsibility is to administer athletic programming for students at a school,” he said. “It involves finding and referees, officials, game workers, ticket-takers, and medical personnel needed to host events at the school as well as ensuring sports teams have their games scheduled, coaches are meeting

certification requirements, gym space is reserved, and students are eligible to participate and compete in sports.”

Clearly then, two are better than one in sharing responsibilities.
