Starting this year with a win against Elk Mound, the Oriole girls varsity softball team scored a 5-3 win April 5 in an away game, going on to defeat Wild Rose 14-0 on Saturday before falling to Manawa 8-9. With the team now 2 -1 to start the season, head coach Andrea Mahr shared more after the results.
“The girls have started off the season ready to compete!” She said. “Starting with a win against Elk Mound really showed that these ladies want to be contenders in every game against every opponent.”
Saying she was impressed with the team’s battling thus far, Mahr said each game played had 15 or more quality at bats with six or more pictures, and that the team was averaging 10 hits per game.
“We have had a few errors but have been able to reset quickly and be ready for the next play,” she said. “We have also gotten out of some big situations by making some double plays and pick off/tag plays.”
Saying that the girls were showing that hard work and confidence could outweigh age and experience, Coach Mahr is proud.
“The girls are showing that hard work and confidence can outweigh their age and inexperience,” she said. “I am very very proud of them so far and I am excited for conference play to begin to see what we can really do!”
The Orioles next Thursday April 11 against the Fall Creek Crickets. Game start is 5 p.m.
