Stanley City Council Approves New SCA Dog Park

After months of planning and spirited community input, the Stanley City Council voted May 19th to approve the updated proposal of a new community dog park on the west side—marking a major win for local pet owners. The project is organized by the Stanley Community Association (SCA) and is spearheaded by Roxie Caswell, who has served as the driving force behind the effort, handling the majority of the planning and coordination to bring the idea to life. The dog park location is across from Chapman Park south of W. 4th Avenue and west of the future bike trail. The proposal passed with overwhelming support from council members, with only Alderperson Laurie Foster voting against the measure, citing concerns about long-term maintenance and owners leaving their dogs there unattended.

Steve Millen, owner of Lube Suppliers Store and the park’s naming sponsor, assured the Council that lawncare would be a priority, saying, “We will make sure it’s maintained.” Millen plans to name the park Echo’s Playground, a Public Dog Park in honor of his Golden Retriever, Echo, who is a favorite among customers at Lube Suppliers Store.

Project organizer Weiland reiterated that the SCA will handle lawn care, signage, and general maintenance, and confirmed a donation box will be installed to help fund future needs. Weiland also noted that as long as proper signage is installed at the dog park, the city will not be held liable for incidents, and their insurance premiums will remain unchanged. Discussions also touched on plans for a gravel parking area.
