Possible 5K run now in discussion for feasibility

“And we’re planning to do our annual candy fundraiser in April,” sophomore student council vice president Teagan Becker informed the school board Monday February 22, saying the fundraiser had been rescheduled from the fall. Appearing before the Stanley-Boyd Board of Education at its February meeting, sophomore council president Emme Felmlee and vice-president Becker were on hand to update the school board, with new ideas to cover.

“Instruction,” President Bob Geist announced at the February School Board meeting for Stanley-Boyd. “Item 2.1 High School Student Council Report,” he said, with S-B sophomore council president Emme Felmlee and vice president Teagan Becker “Winter Carnival was a success, as much as it could be,” Felmlee started out, with Becker mentioning summer dress up day as an activity in the cold weather.

“We had a candy jar where students could guess how many pieces were in it, and the winner got all of the candy,” Felmlee said, taking back the speaker’s post.

Also included as a part of the winter carnival put on at Stanley- Boyd (though not listed by name at the meeting) were class royalty, with kings and queens voted on and in as follows.

For freshmen, it was Tate and Megan, while for sophomores it was Kayte and JJ. For juniors, the class royalty was Takaskhi and Leslie, while for seniors it was Hannah Hause and Spencer Booth in the respective queen and king roles. Royals received a bag of candy “and a standing ovation,” according to the student council members.

Returning to the school board meeting, Winter Carnival also did a daily trivia activity “where homerooms could win snacks,” Felmlee said, with Becker adding that “we got a lot of good feedback on it” and that the trivia event was planned again.

As to the rest of council report, ways had been brainstormed to make dances “more engaging,” while the annual candy fundraiser was in April and the yearly blood drive will not take place, as it was decided with the high school principal Tanya Mahr that there would be a wait “until things are safer” to hold such events, it was reported. Meanwhile, all was not lost in terms of community engagement and give back on the part of the student body. Enter a possible 5K Fall Run!

“We discussed holding a possible 5K run this fall, as a way to connect the school with the community,” Becker said of potential upcoming activities. Felmlee added that while it still remained to be nothing has been planned yet, but if possible and given the green light, the student council will be looking for business sponsors. “All of this planning depends on restrictions with COVID, so we’ll need to look into it” and have more discussion, Becker said.
