It is a credit to the school and its staff when students return to become teachers and Stanley-Boyd has had many amazing alumni return to share their knowledge as educators. Nicole Boie has been a middle school teacher at Stanley-Boyd for the past seven years. Nicole grew up in Stanley, graduated from Stanley-Boyd High School, and began attending the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire for Elementary Education. After graduation, Nicole began working as a teacher and joined the Stanley-Boyd staff in 2017. In 2022, Nicole received her master’s degree in Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Superior.
For as long as she can remember, Nicole has had a love for learning and wanted to be a teacher. She explains, “I have always wanted to be a teacher. I love working with kids and love to see the excitement on their faces when the click happens, and they truly understand the concepts we are talking about. I absolutely love seeing the excitement on the faces of the students as they learn new concepts and begin to believe they really can do it!”
Originally Nicole began teaching Math at Stanley-Boyd but soon switched to Science and Social Studies, which she truly enjoys. She is continually creating new ways to make learning fun for her students and is excited to created memorable moments in her classroom and see what the rest of the year holds. “Science and Social Studies have so many great possibilities to get students thinking and experiencing new things each day and I love to give them new, exciting experiences,” she says.
Nicole moved from Stanley three years ago to live in Cadott with her husband of ten years, Ryan, and her two sons, Chase (7) and Baylor (2). It’s a move that she explains was made to be closer to her husband’s job. Together Nicole and her family love to play board games and outdoor sports. Nicole played volleyball and basketball as a Stanley-Boyd Oriole, and she also enjoys watching sports mainly to cheer on her favorite two teams. “I love to watch football and basketball. The Green Bay Packers and Bucks are two teams I really enjoy watching,” she shares. In her free time Nicole enjoys reading and her favorite books are a popular collection. “My favorite book series is Harry Potter and has been since I was in high school. I have reread this series multiple times!”
Of all the places that she had traveled, Nicole is most excited about La Jolla, California for its amazing beach and perfect weather. She remarks that she would love to travel to Belize someday. “Each year the students do a project on Central America and have to convince me to travel to their country. Belize has always stuck out to me because it is beautiful, and the culture is very unique.”
She shares what career she would choose if she hadn’t become a teacher. “If I wasn’t a teacher, I would be a curriculum developer. I would love to help other teachers plan lessons that impact all students.” She adds that she is a super organized Type-A personality. “My classroom is labeled from top to bottom, and everything has a place.”
In third grade, Nicole learned early on from one of her own teachers to believe in herself and not be afraid to make mistakes. “My third-grade teacher, Michelle Price, was the person who made me believe I could be a teacher. In elementary school spelling was never my strong suit and she made me believe that even though I have downfalls, I can still do anything! I tell this story to my students each year hoping to make them believe that everyone has struggles, it is how you handle those struggles that matters,” she reflects. As she was influenced by her own teacher, Nicole has influenced her students as well and they in turn show her the world through their eyes. “My students have taught me that flexibility is key. The day never goes exactly as planned and they have made me realize that’s okay. Changing on a dime is so important to make sure learning is happening.”
Her students have made a great impact on her, and Nicole has her students’ well-being on her mind even when she isn’t working at school. Nicole’s passion for learning and for her students to excel doesn’t end when the school bell rings each day. “I wish people knew teachers are always doing their best to teach each and every student. We spend so much time outside our contract hours, planning and perfecting lessons to make sure all students are learning at a high level.”
Nicole goes on to mention the struggles that she faces in her classroom. “The hardest challenge is the learning diversity in the classroom. All students learn best in unique ways and trying to teach each one to the best of my ability is very hard.”
She hopes the parents of her students see the depth of her commitment to her students’ success. “I want parents to know I truly care about each and every one of the students I teach. When I leave school each night the students are still on my mind. I want to do what is best for them each and every day. From the moment they enter the door they are my kids and I still think about the first group I had, who are now graduated and well into college, as my kids.”
As a Stanley native, the Stanley community is special to Nicole. When asked why she chose to continue her career at Stanley-Boyd School, she replies that it’s because of her co-workers. “Stanley-Boyd has always had a place in my heart because this is where I grew up, but the people I work with make me stay!” Nicole Boie’s love of teaching and commitment to her students is one of the reasons why Stanley-Boyd Area Schools is an exceptional center for learning!
