Alison Hermann, Middle School Teacher, is one of the many exceptional Stanley-Boyd educators that has worked in the Stanley-Boyd School district for eight years.
She currently resides in Eau Claire where she was born and raised. After graduating from Eau Claire North, Alison attended the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire where she received her degree in Elementary Education and minored in Language Arts. When asked why she chose Stanley-Boyd, Alison explains, “I chose Stanley-Boyd because I knew I wanted a smaller, close-knit community to work in. I also wanted to separate and challenge myself from the town I’ve always known.” She says that the small town feel of Stanley was a great fit for her. “The Stanley-Boyd students and staff really feel like a big family.”
Alison mentions that the teachers at Stanley-Boyd do a great job collaborating and checking in on each other. “We hold ourselves and students to high standards and work together to make sure we achieve our goals.”
Growing up, Alison was very active dancing at an outside studio for fourteen years and was involved in numerous sports throughout her school career. She started playing softball and basketball in elementary school and continued with both throughout high school. She also played tennis and track in middle school and high school but explains that she had to choose between softball and track in high school and picked softball.
“My dad coached baseball and my husband played college baseball, so I’ve watched A LOT of baseball games. I also played softball growing up -so softball/baseball would be my favorite!” She adds that she is a loyal Wisconsin fan. “I also enjoy watching all of the WI sports teams - WI Badgers, Brewers, Packers, and Bucks!”
Alison married her high school sweetheart, Tyler, after fourteen years of dating and her favorite vacation was at Isla Mujeres on their honeymoon.
“It was so breathtaking being on the catamaran to the island. The water was absolutely stunning! We also stopped and snorkeled along the way and saw underwater statues - the pictures online do not do it justice!”
Living in Wisconsin, the winters can be long and cold, and Alison mentions that if she could travel anywhere, it would be somewhere warmer. “I would probably pick Hawaii because I love the beach and warm weather!”
Alison’s busy schedule doesn’t afford her a lot of free time but when she gets a free moment, she enjoys watching a good Hallmark Christmas movie. She also enjoys country music and when she is not helping our middle schoolers grow and succeed, she attends many local country festivals. Alison stays busy helping her close-knit family year-round at Country Thunder, a country music festival in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin. Her grandpa, who recently retired, was the lead grounds manager for over 30 years and her mom and uncle both work full time for the festival as the merchandise manager and beverage manager which causes the rest of the family to get pulled in to help in multiple directions. Even though her grandpa recently retired, Alison’s entire family still attends the festival when they can.
“Something people should know about me is that I am a VERY type-a, organized, task-oriented person,” Alison remarks. “If I wasn’t a teacher, I would be an event planner or wedding planner.” She remarks that she originally went to school to be an event planner her first two years of college before making the switch to education.
Being a teacher is the perfect career for Alison who as a young girl, had such a love for teaching that she even asked for an overhead projector for Christmas when she was in third grade!
“I played school a lot growing up,” she comments. “I had so many great teachers growing up that all impacted my life. I reflect on my middle school years as being the years I really found myself. I think that is why I landed as a middle school teacher.”
Ask her what the best part of being a teacher is and Alison will say that the answer is obvious- the kids. “The world changes, the curriculum changes, but kids will always be kids. They put a smile on my face every single day! Especially goofy middle schoolers!” she shares.
Students are fortunate to have the dedication and care that Alison puts into every aspect of her classroom. In addition to teaching, Alison coaches Middle School Track, Middle and High School Forensics, and advises the Middle School Student Council. She truly cares for her students and wishes parents knew that she is their child’s biggest supporter. “I want parents to know I am on the same team as them - I also want what is best for your kid!” She says that the hardest part of being a teacher is trying to keep up with everything.
“I wish people knew how hard teachers work. I also wish people knew how much we think about and worry about our students,” Alison says explaining that a teacher’s job is never truly “done.” She continues, “Lastly, I wish they knew that once I have a student in my class, I always think of them as “my kid!”
