S-B senior to play basketball for Division II school in St. Augustine

“Since she was in first grade she’s been around basketball,” coach Alison Becker said of daughter Teagen.

It turns out that can pay off. On Wednesday, Nov. 9, senior Teagen Becker signed to play basketball with Flagler College, a school in St. Augustine, Florida that plays in the Peachbelt Conference.

Founded in 1968, the college offers 33 undergraduate majors as well as one master’s program. The letter of intent signed by Becker includes a full ride scholarship for the private school in sunny Florida. So why Flagler for postsecondary plans?

“Obviously the location is nice,” Becker said of choosing the school on Florida’s east coast in North America’s oldest Spanish settlement. “But I’d say mostly it was the coaching staff and meeting with them during my tournaments and my visits that were just really welcoming and open. You could tell they really care about what they do and really want to be successful.”

Growing up under mom Alison as she coached basketball, Teagen didn’t always want to play basketball–and she wasn’t pushed either. In time, it came of its own accord.

Mom Alison played basketball at Clayton as well as the University of Evansville at Indiana and has coached the sport at Waukegan and Chi-Hi–as well as Stanley -Boyd.

Teagen herself has been playing basketball since age 9 and also plays volleyball and track and field.

Both a shooting guard as well as small forward on the basketball court, the fivefoot-eight playmaker is looking forward to the current season. Stanley-Boyd opens against Ladysmith Nov. 22 at home. Teagen will be right there along with her teammates, doing what’s needed to make baskets, and get the win.

Stanley-Boyd senior Teagen Becker has signed to play for Flagler University, seen here on Nov. 9.
