The Stanley Correctional Institution has the second-highest total of positive cases of COVID-19 in the Wisconsin prison system.

The number of inmates testing positive with COIVD-19 ballooned to 219 as of Oct. 30. Only the Waupujn Correctional Institution’s 409 active cases are higher. There are also reportedly 16 SCI employees who have tested positive with COVID-19.

A request for information from SCI on measures being taken at the institution was ignored.

Chippewa County as a whole remains at a severe risk level for COVID-19, and the Stanley Correctional Institution outbreak seems to be driving that surge. There have been 335 new cases in the last week, and about two-thirds of those are at SCI. There have been 1,397 total cases. of the cases, 48.9 percent of them are in Chippewa Falls and 17 percent of them are in Stanley, while 12 percent are in Bloomer. Boyd has 3 percent of the cases, and Cadott has 3.5 percent of them.

As of Friday, 14 people in Chippewa County were hospitalized, and the county attributed 11 deaths to COVID-19-releated symptoms.

In the last month, bars and restaurants where there was potential exposure included several locally, including Maple Hill in Boyd and the Curve Inn in Stanley on Oct. 10.

The most recent establishments where outbreaks were noted include Loopy’s in Chippewa Falls, the Pines Ballroom in Bloomer and the Frog Hop in Cadott, all on Oct. 17, and the SandBar in chippewa Falls on Oct. 16.
