Tracks and Trails From the Outdoors By Al Brown Gunshots ring out over Chapman Lake By invitation, Thursday morning, September 1, I met Jim Brown and five members of his selected goose eradication team assembled on north Broadway Street near the Stanley Case Works. The mission was to form a strategy to reduce the goose population which frequents Chapman Lake. As the group assembled to discuss and plan the process, three small flocks of geese flew over the city and made their approach onto Chapman Lake. A couple of team members commented about the pretty sight of observing their graceful entrance before landing.

The team, all of which are avid sportsmen, were not enthused about area newspaper, radio and television coverage referring to the eradication process as a goose hunt…A major portion of the process involved use of dogs to retrieve the birds from the water. “Without the dogs, this project wouldn’t have been possible. Today has been about the dogs,” Brown explained.

The team bagged a total of 13 of approximately 45 geese present over a threehour period. Although difficult, there were signs of the group attempting to treat the process with a touch of sportsmanship. It’s rather unusual for an experienced goose hunter to ground swat birds. Brown explained. “It’s kind of rough to shoot geese on the wing within the city limits….For safety reasons, all the shooting had to take place over the water,” he added…Four Labrador Retrievers were present to offer their skills. Raven and Widgeon, owned by Jim Brown; Remington, owned by Terry Pease; and Jack, owned by Dave Burzynski.

Shilts learning from the best (photo William Henderson with Joey Shilts) Joey Shilts, of Stanley, successfully completed his second year at the William Henderson Football Camp Green Bay.

Joey was trained for seven hours a day for one week with Henderson and outstanding coaches. They trained each player on quickness, speed, skill, strength and taught teamwork, self-discipline and they learned the importance of achieving good grades.

This year, Joey had a chance to train with running backs Ahman Green, Daren Sharper, Tony Fisher and wide receiver Donald Driver. He also met and received autographs from many other Packers.

Joey had a very hot week in training, but is looking forward to next year’s camp. He is looking forward to playing another year for the Stanley-Boyd Orioles eighth grade football team.

Orioles Come From Behind To Defeat Cumberland 12-6; Meet Thorp Here Friday AN ELECTRIFYING 96 yard run with an intercepted pass gave the Stanley-Boyd Orioles a come-from behind, 12-6 non-conference win over the Cumberland Beavers Friday night at Chapman Park.

With less than four minutes to play, a 6-6 score showing on the scoreboard and Cumberland deep in Oriole territory, the Beaver quarterback elected to pass.

His pass was hit by Clayton Herrick over the hands of the receiver and deflected into the waiting hands of Steve Zais, who gathered in the ball, picked his field and behind some good blocking, romped 96 yards for the winning touchdown.

Head Coach Gene Hatfield told the Republican that the offense didn’t look too sharp and said that they had looked better in scrimmage against McDonnel. Greg Steivang had a good night passing, as he completed 6 of 8 attempts.

He said the defense played real well except for some trouble containing their option play. He added that Herrick and Zais had saved the game for the squad.

HATFIELD CITED Marty Hatfield for playing really well, Randy Gerrits for doing a steady job on defense and Wayne Lechleitner for his play, noting that Cumberland had a lot more trouble when they tried to go right of the line.

CALL GOES FORTH TO RETURN TO STUDIES Stanley Country Homes Busy Preparing Youth For School, Starting Tuesday The great event of the year in the majority of Stanley homes occurs next Monday morning when the young people surrender the freedom which they have enjoyed for three months and turn their faces, freshly scrubbed, toward the public school buildings which will be the scenes of their major activities for the next nine months. Even now mothers are busy rounding up the youngsters, taking an inventory of their needs, scrubbing their bodies, getting their hair trimmed and laying out their outfits of fresh clean clothing in readiness for the change in the home schedule which is heralded by the opening of the school year.

The greatest air battle ever fought was that of last Thursday when 1,000 German planes invaded England, and were opposed by a probably equal number of English planes. The British claim that 144 German bombers were shot down, making the score for the week 440. The British lost 27 fighters on the same day with a total of 100 for the week… FORGET YOUR TROUBLES THIS WEEK END AT THEATRE Olivia DeHavilland Stars in “My Love Came Back,” Strong Supporting Cast For complete relaxation and enjoyment, you should see “My Love Came Back,” showing at the Stanley Theater, for three days beginning on Sunday…The story has no hint of world conditions or problems but is a charming romance with delightful music and gay (happy) laughter to make you forget the day’s worries.
