Varsity girls wrestling team approved by School Board

Girls varsity wrestling will officially be an option at Stanley-Boyd this coming year, thanks to a vote by the Stanley-Boyd school board at its regular June meeting. The move to create a girls varsity team will allow female wrestlers who wish to compete at state competitions to do so, as the sport continues to develop at the larger state level. Motion was made by Bob Geist and seconded by Becky Peterson to approve the team, following recommendation by athletic director Nick Mahr and wrestling coach Greg Burzynski. Coach Burzynski shared on the new opportunity and what it offers when reached for comment.

“I am excited to add the program to SB!” he said. “The WIAA made girls wrestling an official sport two seasons ago. Girls wrestling is one of the fastest growing sports in the country and in our state. Last year the girls state tournament ran concurrently with the boys tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison.  Hopefully we can grow the sport here. As to what wrestling entails from a mental and physical standpoint, Burzynski had this to say:

“Wrestling is one of the most grueling mental and physical activities,” he said. “Our athletes perform on the mat alone against an opponent. The fans see all of the good things wrestlers do and the mistakes they make. It takes a lot of mental toughness to compete in a sport that will humble even our best athletes on a daily basis. Elite wrestlers learn from mistakes and move on.  Along with helping to build a strong work ethic; perseverance, resilience, and grit are just a few of the characteristics wrestling helps build along with the physical benefits of peak aerobic conditioning and strength development.”

Those interested in joining the new girls wrestling team should contact the coaching staff for more details.
