School is once again upon us and with that comes football season. Leading the Orioles this year will be Coach Brody Mahr, named to succeed Jeff Koenig as Orioles Head Coach after Koenig resigned from the head coach position last spring.
Now in his 21st year of coaching, Mahr previously served as defensive coordinator, wide receivers coach, and defensive line coach before being named head football coach. Assisting Coach Mahr this year with the Orioles football team are assistant coaches Danny Halterman, Jason Isenberger, Matt Miklasz, Travis Schindler, Nick Sturm, Jeff Trunkel, Ben Turner, and Ryan Wundrow.
“Our staff this year is experienced and talented,” Mahr said in summing up the assistant coaching staff. We are very fortunate to have them.”
As for players, the Orioles will return 11 seniors, with 54 players overall.
“We return 11 seniors,” Coach Mahr said.“Willy Graham is a First Team All-Conference offensive lineman and a key defensive player. Carson Hodowanic, a First Team All-Conference defensive back, is a dynamic athlete who will see a bigger role on offense. Aaron Sturm returns as a Second Team All-Conference defensive back and a four-year starter. We’ll be young overall, but we plan to get players up to speed quickly.” Included on the roster along with the seniors are 10 juniors, 14 sophomores, and 18 freshmen, with many positions still open.
“Many positions are still open,” Mahr said. “We’re challenging players to compete every day, and starting spots will be earned through that competition.”
Mahr also shared more on his coaching philosophy as the football season gets started.
“I’m a relationship based coach,” he said. “Building relationships lead to trust and communication which ultimately lead to commitment, and that builds better players and people. We focus on three core traits: discipline, toughness, and selflessness. I believe culture is more important than scheme, and we’ll establish it from day one.”
The Orioles hit the field for a scrimmage against Abbotsford, Elk Mound, Spencer, and Spring Valley on Friday, August 15 at 10:00 a.m. in Oriole Park, followed by a varsity game against Colby on Friday, August 22 at 7:00 p.m., also at Oriole Park.
