In a well-attended seven-inning game against the Gilman Pirates, the Stanley-Boyd Girls Varsity Softball team came away with a 4 – 3 win at home in Oriole Park, while away at Elk Mound they fell 6-7 for a loss. As to the game against the Pirates, Gilman came away with more hits at 11 overall, while the Oriole girls were able to turn a smaller number of hits—-just five in total— into actual base rounding, thereby clinching the game.

Starting in the first inning it was all Gilman, with the score 1 – 0 at the bottom of the first. With neither team scoring in the second inning, Gilman pulled still further ahead in the third, with an additional two runs brought home for three total—and that was it for the game as far as the Pirates were concerned.

With no one scoring in the fourth inning, Stanley-Boyd got its first run in the fifth and brought it all home in the seventh, with three rans in to win the game. Scoring four hits and two mns for the Pirates April 29 was #2 Duellman, while especially key to the Oriole’s win were Monica Derks and Abby Reynolds, each batting in a run in addition to one of their own, with two strikeouts each.

As to pitching for the Orioles, Ashley Zastrow went seven innings straight, with 128 total pitches and a strike percentage of .641 over the game. With Zastrow pitching eleven strikeouts to balance against three runs and two walks, the Orioles won over Gilman 4-3 when the dust was settled. As to their Elk Mound performance, the end result was somewhat different.

Starting the first inning with four rans to just one for Elk Mound, the Orioles followed this up with two more in the second, while Elk Mound came back in the third inning with a solid six runs to bring the score 7 – 6 in Elk Mound’s favor—and with that, the game was over.

With Sierra Close pitching just 2.1 innings, with 45 pitches total and a strike ratio of .556, the honor in terms of ran against Elk Mound went to Taniele Ducommun, who scored two of the Orioles six total, while Chelsie Nawrocki batted in a run in addition to one of her own.

For baseball, meanwhile, it was much the same against Elk Mound, with the Oriole Boys Varsity coming away with a 5 – 7 loss to their neighbors on Interstate 94. The season is young, however, so that hope remains.
