It was a cold April day, with average voter turnout.
“For this type of election it was average,” Boyd Deputy Clerk Jayne Geist said of the 182 ballots cast, with 17 absentee included in the number.
At Stanley, meanwhile, 627 out of 1,268 eligible voters chose to cast a ballot Tuesday. Included in this number were 64 absentee ballots for Chippewa County and one absentee ballot for that portion of Stanley in Clark County. Eighteen voters at Stanley registered on Election Day, three of these from that portion of the city in Clark County. No local races were contested at Stanley or Boyd.
As for returns on contested local races, Shawn Stuttgen defeated George Wellner for Edson Supervisor 2, with Stuttgen polling 180 votes to 132 for Wellner. At Thorp, Michelle Pogodzinski defeated Raymond Jacks for Treasurer, while Louis Andruszkiewicz won a seat as Supervisor 2, polling at 182 votes to seven for Roger Wundrow and 23 for James Hickman. At Taft, Chairman Darrell Thompson defeated challenger Ben Niedszwiecki to win another term as town chair. A full listing of local race vote returns is below.
As for returns on contested state races in Chippewa County, meanwhile, Brittany Kinser polled in over incumbent Jill Underly for state superintendent, receiving 12,714 votes to 10,068 for Underly. Write-in Adrianne Melby received eight votes, with 32 scatter votes.
Statewide, Underly defeated Kinser to win a second term as state school superintendent.
As for Supreme Court, Brad Schimel won over Susan Crawford locally, a reversal of the statewide outcome. Schimel received 14,058 votes to 11,569 for Crawford, with eight write-ins. District 3 Court of Appeals Judge Lisa K. Stark received 17,507 votes, with 76 write-ins. Stark had no challenger. As for the referendum to amend the state constitution on voter ID, Chippewa County voters concurred with the state result by a margin of 3-1, a full 17,701 voting in favor of the amendment with 6,963 against.
Voters in Eau Claire County are more nuanced in support, a total of 23,494 voting ‘yes’ to the ballot measure while 18,664 voted ‘no.’ Additionally, one person in Eau Claire County voted for both options (overvoted) while 1,953 opted not to cast a vote on the matter (undervoted). Eau Claire County voters also chose Underly to Kinser by a vote of 24,420 to 15,561, with Melby receiving seven and 231 scattering. Eau Claire County voters chose Crawford to Schimel by a vote of 27,618 to 16,334 with 36 scattering, while Stark polled at 31,245 votes for District Court of Appeals 3 to 445 scatter votes. Eau Claire District Judge candidate Douglas Hoffer received 29,879 vote to 414 scatter votes.
At Clark County, meanwhile, election returns for state superintendent showed 6,139 votes for Kinser to 3,613 for Underly with write-in Adrianne Melby receiving five votes, while State Supreme Court saw a vote of 6,639 for Schimel to 3,815 for Crawford. District 4 Court of Appeals Judge candidate Jennifer Nashold received a total of 7,599 votes, while the state constitutional referendum on voter ID saw 8,013 vote in favor with 2,218 against.
Crossing the county line into Taylor County, voters chose Kinser over Underly for state superintendent by a vote of 4,532 to 2,367, with Melby receiving 10 votes. State Supreme Court saw Taylor County support Schimel over Crawford with 5,264 to votes to 2,176, there being zero write-ins.
As for amending the state constitution on voter ID, the county wide numbers at Taylor were 5,977 in favor and 1,364 against.
Vote totals were not broken down by municipality for state races on the Taylor County website.
Returning to more local races, city of Stanley returns saw Ben Wald reelected to Ward 1 Alderperson with a total of 157 votes, with two write-ins. Also at Stanley, Ward 2 Alderperson Jason Meyer polled 101 votes to win reelection, with zero write-ins. There was no candidate for Ward 3 in Stanley but six write-ins. Terry Metzger was appointed and sworn in at the Monday, April 7 council meeting, while Keith Samuelson will be sworn in at the April 21 meeting to replace Jacob Huff. Laurie Foster polled 105 votes for Ward 4 and 7 to 9, with zero write-ins.
At Boyd, Bob Geist won reelection to the village presidency with 141 votes for village president, there being zero write-ins. Also at Boyd, Dale Isaacs polled 100 votes for trustee while Michael Eslinger polled 127 votes for the same, there being zero write-ins.
Over at the city of Thorp meanwhile, returns show Brian Abramczak with 143 votes for District 3 Alderperson to 5 write-ins, Josh Rosemeyer with 76 votes for District 4 Alderperson to one write-in, and Rodney Enkers with 403 votes for Alderperson at Large to nine write-ins.
As for Stanley-Boyd School Board, Becky Peterson polled 1,494 votes district wide for Area One Board member to seven write-ins. Lanse Carlson polled 1,425 total votes for Area Two School Board Member, with 12 write-ins.
For those readers residing to the west in the Cadott school district, returns for school board show Bradley Sonnentag polling 1,264 total votes, with Karen Winchell coming in with 1,148 votes. Kevin R. Roshell polled 1,098 votes, there being a total of 23 write-ins and 23 undervotes as well, an undervote meaning that a voter opted not to make a choice in the race.
For those to the east in the Thorp school district, returns for school board show Lana Ciolkosz with 842 votes, Jason Maier with 582 votes, Kari Bielcki with 372 votes, and Angela Hertz with 222 votes, with zero write ins.
For those to the north in Gilman school district, returns show Lynn Rosemeyer with 877 votes, Derrick Romig with 532 votes, Holly S. Bacha with 630 votes, Vonda Kinas with 315 votes, and Josh Mann with 635 votes, there being zero write-ins.
In village returns elsewhere, Gilman voters reelected incumbent Jane DeStaercke over challenger Jerry Smith, DeStaercke polling 83 votes to 68 for Smith.
In Trustee returns, results show Russell Baker with 108 votes, Mark Person with 114, Karen James with 101, and Derrick J. Romig with 68, with zero write-in votes.
At Lublin, incumbent Randy Madlon defeated challenger Todd Benkowski for the village presidency, Madlon polling 40 votes to 22 for Benkowski.
As for Lublin Trustee, returns show Christine Nowak filling the seat of Father Hermann Klarr, who declined candidacy in January. Incumbent Christine Compagnone won reelection to the other open seat. Village returns show Nowak with 43 votes, Compagnone with 46, Richard Pulcher with 15 and Frenchy Lehouillier with 16, there being zero write-ins.
