Wrestlers battle on as Regionals approach, compete in home triangular

With wrestling season advancing to regionals soon, the Orioles hosted a home wrestling triangular with Spencer/Columbus Catholic and McDonell/Elk Mound Thursday, Jan. 23. Team score against SpencerColumbus Catholic was 30-45, while agains McDonell/Elk Mound the Orioles came out 70-12 overall.

Included in victories against McDonell/Elk Mound, Koraline Pennala won by fall (5:49) over Allison Cronk in the 113 pound weight class, while Ryan Bowe. (144), Caiden Paul (150), and Dylan Seichter (190) won by fall in their weight classes as well.

Victories against Spencer/Columbus Catholic were similar, with Hunter Gadke (126), Caiden Paul (150), Aaron Sturm (175), and Willy Graham (285) each logging wins by fall or decision in their weight classes.

Following up the home triangular at Stanley-Boyd with a tournament at Chetek Weyerhauser, the Orioles came away with several wrestlers on the podium, Willy Graham and Aaron Sturm each placing first in their weight class.

Orioles head coach Jake Fitzsimmons shared more after the results were in.

“Willy pinned his way through the tournament,” he said. “Aaron Sturm also took first and wrestled well. He beat a wrestler in the finals who he lost to earlier this year, which is a sign of his hard work and improvement. Dredyn Arneson and Caiden Paul took third.”

Fitzsimmons also shared on the season to date and milestones achieved.

“Very happy for Willy getting his 100th win,” Fitzsimmons said of competition against Regis Altoona and Cadott Jan. 16. “He has worked hard and wrestled well at Regis. As a team we still have some mistakes to clean up and will continue to work on those at practice.”
