The Stanley-Boyd/Owen-Withee wrestling team had a good day Saturday, crowning two Cloverbelt Conference champions and had three runner-ups.
The conference meet washed at Stanley-Boyd High School, and it was inspirational for the wrestlers to see 22 former Oriole state-qualifiers in attendance at the meet, as they were introduced to the crowd. Blaine Brenner and Tyler Krizan were the two Oriole wrestlers to leave as conference champions. Trystan Christoph, Joseph McDermond and Preston Potaczek finished in second place while Justin McManus and Dustin Bergman left with third place.
With a bye in the quarterfinals, Brenner’s first opponent was Hunter Breaker from Osseo-Fairchild/Augusta/Fall Creek. The referee called a stop just under two minutes into the match after Brenner pinned Breaker.
In the first-place match, Abbotsford/Colby’s River Halopka stepped onto the mat against Stanley-Boyd’s most elite wrestler. Brenner left victorious with a 6-1 decision victory over the other 126-pound wrestler to secure his conference championship victory.
Competing at 285-pounds, Krizan scored a pin in the semifinals against O-F/A/FC wrestler Isaiah Waggoner in 2:39.
Facing off against Cadott’s Josh Briggs, Krizan finished his day with a pin 3:43 into the match to win the Cloverbelt Conference championship.
Christoph, wrestling at 138 pounds, scored a fall in his first match against Regis/Altoona’s Joaquin Nari Marrcos in 2:38 before being pinned in the championship by Cadott’s Cole Pfeiffer.
McDermond pinned O-F/A/FC’s Cole Myers at 145 pounds in 5:45 in the semifinals but fell short in the final match against Dawson Webster of Cadott, 9-3.
After Potaczek’s semifinals bye, he needed just 49 seconds to pin Abbotsford/Colby’s Joe Hawthorne, wrestling at 160 pounds. Potaczek lost a major decision to Tommy Friemoth of Nellsville/Greenwood/Loyal in the following match.
Justin McManus had a busy day for the Orioles. First, he pinned Thorp’s Cera Philson in 1:28 in the 106-pound quarterfinals. Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal’s Luke Dux got the best of him in the Semifinals with a 1:16 pin but McManus came back strong with a two more pins of his own. First, he defeated OF/ A/FC’s Bryce Armstrong-Baglien in 2:51 and next up was Regis/Altoona’s Deaglan O’Connell in just 1:16 to secure third place.
Dustin Bergman’s first pin at 132 pounds came against O-F/A/FC’s Dustin Sudbrink in merely 43 seconds.
After a technical fall loss to Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal’s Keeghan Anding, Bergman followed it up with a 2:42 fall over Liam O’Connell of Regis/Altoona.
Bergman wasn’t done yet, though.
In the third-place match, he pinned opponent Jose Rodriguez of Abbotsford/Colby in nearly six minutes.
The Orioles will be back in action this Saturday in Eau Claire at Regis High School for the WIAA Division 2 Regional competition.
