Krizan put his mark on Stanley-Boyd wrestling

The Stanley-Boyd wrestling team had a good day at the WIAA Sectional Meet in Neillsville Saturday. After a full day of wrestling, the Orioles send one wrestler to the WIAA State Meet. The pared down state event will be held Saturday at Adams-Friendship High School The Orioles will be represented by two-time state champ Blaine Brenner. He won the title at 106 two years ago and at 120 last year. This year, he moved up to 132, where he has been dominant all season. He pinned his way to the championship Saturday at the Sectional event.

“Overall we had a pretty decent day,” said Coach Greg Burzynski. “Blaine just is dominant. He works so hard, and he’s hard to compete against.”

In addition to Brenner’s title, freshman Breaking Burzynski took fourth and senior Tyler Krizan capped off his impressive Stanley- Boyd career with a fifth-place finish. Alexander Nitz also took fifth in his third straight year of qualifying for Sectionals.

Brenner won his opening match of the morning by fall in 2:52 and needed just 48 seconds to pin Austin Schmidt of Baldwin-Woodville in the semifinals. At center mat at the close of the day, Brenner aggressively went after Markus Brown of Northwestern, who was undefeated on the season. Brenner pinned him in 1:16.

Brenner, who will wrestle at the University of Minnesota next year, has been ranked number one in the state all season. Brown came into the match with Brenner ranked fourth.

Brenner opens up at state against Joe Quaglia of Belleville/Monticello/New Glarus. Quaglia, a senior, is 12-2. Brenner is a perfect 15-0. An opening match win would pit Brenner against Freedom sophomore Nathan VandeHey.

Freshman Breckin Burzynski had an impressive day, and his season ends with him ranked 12th in the state in the last Wisconsin Wrestling rankings.

“Breckin wrestled really well,” said Coach Burzynski. He had six losses this year, three to the kid he wrestled in the third place match. He just made one mistake in that match, and that’s what did it. I’m proud of how he wrestled for sure.”

Burzynski picked up a 4-2 decision in his opening match before falling to Tanner Andersen by a 6-2 decision in his semifinal match. Andersen, of Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau/Melrose- Mindoro is ranked second in the state.

In his consolation semifinal match, Burzynski pick up a pin in 3:51. He lost the third place match to Chase Kostka of Regis-Altoona by a 10-5 decision.

Alexander “Sasha” Nitz, a junior, finished his season with just six varsity matches, but had a big day at sectionals. He started the day with a pin before losing in the semifinals and dropping a 9-4 decision in the consolation finals that placed him fifth overall.

“Sasha did some really good things,” said Coach Burzynski. “He’s a three-time Sectional qualifier. He’s a tough kid. I’m looking forward to him coming back next year.”

Coach Burzynski had lots of good things to say about the mark Krizan has made on the Stanley-Boyd wrestling program in his four years.

“Tyler has been a fun kid to have around. He finished 89-49 for us. He had a great career. He’s just a good guy to have in the wrestling room,” said Burzynski. “He’s always been the first kid helping out with youth wrestling. It’s nice to see wrestlers giving back. He’s one of our kids that is for sure there and helping out. We’re going to miss him.”

Krizan picked up his first win of the day with a pin in 1:18 in the first consolation round. He lost a tough decision in the consolation semifinals, 4-2. Krizan went out with a win: Pinning Josh Hair of Saint Croix Central in 3:39 in the fifth-place match.
