1912 Stanley historic pictures to appear on this page for the next six weeks

The Stanley Republican, in conjunction with the Stanley Area Historical Society (SAHS), will be bringing readers an interesting series of pictures of what Stanley looked like 111 years ago.  The series of pictures to be featured were taken from a 1912 Panoramic View of Stanley, that was a six fold postcard, that would have been available for purchase from variety stores in that era. Postcards were often purchased when a visitor to a community wanted to share a picture of a growing community with folks back home or to keep as a memento of a trip.  Trips in the early 1900’s required considerable planning as there were no major highways or airlines, so extended travel was mostly by train and often required a number of transfers.

The pictures to be featured have been enhanced (colored and enlarged) by SAHS member Dave Plummer.  The enhancements enable the viewer to see a number of features that were not as visible in the original black and white print.  Each week the picture featured will be accompanied by commentary that will point out some buildings including what stands on the sites today.

Within the not too distant future, the Stanley Area Historical Society is planning to publish a 160 page Pictorial Book of Stanley that will include the photos in this series, plus many others.  The effort to publish the book will be lead by Dave Plummer, Betty Plombon and Dave Jankoski and will consist of pictures from the over 10,000 photos in the SAHS files and from the private collections of Plummer and Jankoski.

SAHS thanks John McLoone (Editor and Publisher) and Joe Back (Reporter) for assisting in bringing these photos to readers of this newspaper. Enjoy!!
