Diane Weggen was honored at a Testimonial Dinner at Holy Family Hall in Stanley on Saturday, June 11. During the past year, Weggen has served as the Wisconsin Auxiliary President. Dignitaries from throughout the state were in attendance, in addition to family, friends and members of the American Legion Auxiliary, Cecil Torney Unit #118 of Thorp. +++ As of May 4, 2022, Jessica Gardner and Julie Petranovich are the new owners/operators of Sweet Memories Bakery in downtown Thorp. The ladies are sisters and have family connections with long histories of baking. Their plan is to maintain the legacy of high quality that the bakery had become known for. +++ At their meeting on June 13, the Thorp City Council approved the purchase of a new phone system using American Rescue Plan Act funds. +++ From Memory Lane – 125 Years Ago (1897) Thorp High School held its seventh commencement exercises at Walsdorf Hall for four graduates – two males and two females.

At their June 13 meeting, the Cadott School Board voted to hire a Concessions Coordinator. The position is intended to keep the school’s concession stand and the fundraising options it offers running smoothly. +++ The Lake Holcombe Improvement Association was back at the Town of Lake Holcombe Board Meeting on June 9. With a number of members in attendance, an ordinance they had drawn up by an attorney was discussed. An extended exchange between board members and the attendees took place. The proposed ordinance would be an attempt to limit water traffic for safety reasons. Audience members asked that the issue be sent to a focus group, or committee, and that the Board put comprehensive planningonthenextagenda. Neithersuggestiongotapproved. +++ For the first time since 1984, on May 26, the Cadott Hornets Softball Team was crowned as Regional Champions.

Bloomer Advance

A historic Bloomer house is on the market. The 1904 home was originally built by John and Augusta Smith, who came from Appleton and purchased open land to build their home. Documentation indicates it was surrounded by only an apple and plum orchard. Perhaps the most colorful part of the home’s history is the fact that it served as a “Baby Hospital” in the 1940’s until the late 1950’s. Dora Misfeldt was a mid-wife and it is known that 100 babies were born in the house. Among the home’s 2,308 square feet features are four bedrooms, the original wood work, lead windows, and a wrap-around porch. The home is filled with many memories and is looking for the next owners to make more memories. +++ As a result of a resolution passed by the Bloomer City Council, at their June 8 meeting, special assessments will be coming to residents along 19th Avenue West, Priddy South and portions of Henderson Avenue. The special assessments include costs of curb and gutter, sidewalks and driveway approaches. Property owners will have six years to pay for the improvements. The first year will be interest free and years 2-6 will be at 1 percent.

O-W Enterprise

On June 8, the Owen-Withee Area Historical Society held their first official meeting. A small group of area citizens met and approved By-Laws, set a dues structure, and elected five directors, from which the officers were elected. Three goals were established for the new organization: 1.) Prepare the former city hall for a museum/displays. 2.) Hold a Membership Drive. 3.) Build relationships with other historical organizations. The Directors will also be working on achieving affiliation with the State Historical Society and gaining 501(c) (3) status.

The Unity American Legion celebrated its 100th Anniversary on Saturday, June 11. +++ At a cost of $38,330, the Curtiss Village Board approved the purchase of 10 aerators for their lagoons at the wastewater treatment plant. The purchase is part of the plan to bring down the high volatile solids and stabilize the sludge. The aerators are designed to supply 310 lbs. of oxygen per day. They also prevent the production of sulfur-dioxide which causes odors. +++ The Colby-Abbotsford Police Chief is not opposed to a request to open Abbotsford Streets to side-by-sides. However, he pointed out that the one percent of owners who don’t comply with rules causes more work for the department.

The Owen-Withee Lions have updated the Withee Lions Park with a new gazebo and a new piece of playground equipment. +++ Suspended five stories high, 37-year old Ashley McCauley and 33-year old Jordan Wolf, on June 4, took their turns stepping out of a metal safety cage hanging from the end of a crane, and onto a pair of stilts standing 54 feet, one inch tall. The two then each took 10 unsupported steps forward on aluminum stilts weighing 97 pounds. This unofficially set a new stilt walking world record.

The Clark County Press

After serving Clark County for more than four decades, as either county coroner or deputy coroner, Richard Schleifer will not be seeking reelection. The retiring Schleifer served 21-years as assistant coroner and in 2000, when coroner Bob Lulloff retired, he decided to run for the position and was elected and reelected since then.+++ On June 10, as a tribute to Tom Kren, age 59, a tractor procession went through downtown Neillsville towards his funeral at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The well known local farmer died June 7, in an accident involving a tractor and a semi truck.

Tri -County Area Times

On May 25, students from Kayla Martinson’s Agri-science classes at Augusta High School enjoyed a field-trip to St. Isadore’s Dairy Farm near Osseo. The farm is owned and operated by Inga and Chance Witscher, and the host of “Around the Farm Table” a television show on PBS, which often features a small farmstead.

Bualo County News

The new Mondovi Public Library Director is Alexa Newman, who comes to the position from the Algonquin (IL) Area Public Library, where she worked for 17 years. Most recently, she served as the youth services outreach librarian and describes herself as having a passion for library programming. She took the reins at Mondovi on May 16.

The Jackson County Historical Society held its “Voices of the Silent City” program at Riverside Cemetery June 4. Tour guides led guests through the cemetery visiting the graves of eight Jackson Countyresidents. Costumedreenactorssharedfirst-person stories at each grave site visited.
