 Erin Bowin-Brazell: Attend Globe University for Associates Degree in Veterinary Technology  Ashley Brody: I plan to follow my love of art and visit my family in my hometown, Watertown, WI (Maybe move there too).

Jesse Brunner: Finish Basic and AIT, go to CVTC for welding and hopefully open my own shop.

Joshua Brunner: Go to Vermillion for Natural Resources.

Samantha Caswell: Attend Columbia College in Chicago in Arts, Entertainment, Media Management.

Brett Chwala: Attend CVTC for the Criminal Justice Program.

Kristina Clarke Katelynn Cox: Attend North Dakota State University for Pre-Medicine to become an OB/GYN.

Julie Dahl: National Guard and go to CVTC for Law Enforcement at the same time.

The program will include a prayer service and an honor guard to fire a salute.

Dean Mahr announces his candidacy for the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board in District 6, being named Outstanding Young Man in the Stanley Community and a State KC Family of the Month.

“Being an active dairy farmer who’s currently experiencing the economic slump of today’s industry, I feel District 6 needs some ‘new blood’ on the board to contribute fresh ideas for promoting Wisconsin dairy products,” Mahr related of his candidacy. Also running were Allard Peck of Chippewa Falls and Robert Seibl of Bloomer are also candidates for the position.

40 years ago May 13, 1982 Jack Knar Named “Businessman of the Month” for May When a parent owns a business, sometimes their children take a special interest in it, learn the ropes, and eventually end up managing the business themselves. This is what happened in the case of Jack Knar, the Stanley Commercial Club’s “Businessman of the Month.

Jack is the owner of Knar Ford Sales, 240 South Broadway. He is a lifelong resident of Stanley, graduating with the Stanley High School Class of 1952. He attended North-West School in Minneapolis for two years and also studied a semester at the UW—Eau Claire.

His father, John, started Knar’s Service Station at the same location in 1935. Jack went into the business with his father in 1954. In April of 1966 they added the Ford franchise and facilities for the garage as it is today.

60 years ago May 3, 1962 Meadows to Head Cancer Crusade Philip A. Meadows, of Boyd has appointed area chairman of the annual “Cancer Crusade’ by the Chippewa county unit of the American Cancer society.

His area will cover Anson, Delmar, Edson, Goetz, and Sigel townships and the communities of Boyd, Cadott, Jim Falls and Stanley.

Helpers are still needed in Anson, Edson and Sigel, the report says.

Student Tells Of Life On ‘Dark Continent’ When he first came to Wis consin, Justin Kitonga expected to see cowboys, horses, and six shooters.

That was the impression of American the young African college student from Nairobi, Kenya, had gotten from books he read and the movies he had seen.

Kitonga, a student at Eau Claire State College, spoke before a group of about 150 at the father-son banquet held Saturday evening at Our Savior’s Lutheran church.

He related other impressions of America too,. But most of his talk was aimed at describing his native Africa for his American audience.

Kitonga, who has been in the U.S. 2 ½ years and is majoring in social science and economics at Eau Claire, is planning to work in the government service when Kenya receives its independence from Britain a few years hence. His admitted objective while here is to learn as many things as possible which may benefit his country, then return home and put his knowledge into practice.

The son of a native minister in the African Inland (Protestant interdenominational) church, Kitonga pointed out that church services are conducted in the various tribal languages, of which there are 70 in Kenya alone, rather than in English. English is spoken mostly by younger people, who start learning it while in second or third grade.

Church Addition to be dedicated Sunday Four events will mark the dedication Sunday of the newly enlarged and remodeled Epiphany Lutheran church on the city’s south side.

At 9:00 a.m., a dedication service will be held, with the Rev. R. W. Olson, pastor of the church, as speaker. A dedication dinner will be held at noon in the church basement.

At three 0’clock Sunday afternoon, a special “dedication service of praise and thanksgiving” is scheduled, to be followed at 4:15 by an open house and a buuet lunch.

The Rev. F. G. Sprengler of Dorchester, a former pastor at Epiphany Lutheran will be the guest speaker at the 3:00 service.

Epiphany’s remodeling program started last fall with the construction of an addition of some 30 feet to the north end of the church. The entire interior of the church has been redecorated and many new items of furniture added, including a new pulpit, lectern, and new carpeting.

70 years ago May 15, 1952 Front page obituaries: Mrs. Peter Thompson. Born in Telmarken, Norway on May 26, 1875, married to Peter Thompson in Telemarken in 1897 and later emigrated with him to the United States. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery.

Melvin Duss, 19, of Boyd. Born May 15, 1932 and attended schools in Delmar and Boyd. Funeral at St. Joseph’s and burial in church cemetery.

Mrs. Sabra Berry, age 87 and a well-known Stanley resident, at Victory Memorial Hospital on May 7.

Born January 17, 1865 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Emigrated to Wisconsin at age 11 with parents. Setteld in Edson and later moved to California. Married Jaems Berry after death of first husband and lived in Indiana. Returned to Stanley to live after second husband’s death, with a brief return to California before Stanley won out. The Reverend Lelan Shaw performed funeral services at the Plombon Funeral Home, with burial in Edson Union Cemetery.

Rural Life Sunday, on May 18, will be celebrated by the 4-H members throughout the nation to emphasize the meaning of Christianity in rural life.

Rural Life on 4-H Sunday will be celebrated by the 4-H members by attending the church of their choice, or in many cases they wil go to church in a body for special services.

This day is celebrated in keeping the 4-H Heart ‘H’ in the development of their own spiritual lives. Today in an era of crisis in the world, it is essential for all to meet with a great development on the spir- itual side, to stand firm under the pressure of society.

80 years ago May 1, 1942

Abroad: U. S. Planes participate in raid on Japanese mainland, with the great part of Japan under air raid alarm. The Japanese army, meanwhile, is reported to be in the Philippines to build the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Spere (i.e the Japanese Empire). U. S. Secretary of War Stimson announces the U. S. “will soon be ready for a gen- eral ouensive in the east and Europe. “So far as the army is concerned, we are getting pretty near the stage of being ready for an ouensive, howev – er divcult it may be.” Massive air raid planned from England to Germany that will ostensibly “change the whole aspect of the war.” Bernard Roe, a World War I veteran and once of Stanley, is commissioned a captain in the Army at Chicago.
