FROM THE CORNER

On February 15, the National Weather Service out of La Crosse announced that on December 15, 2021, there were a to – tal of ten tornadoes in Wisconsin, with the Stanley tornado that occurred at 9:16 pm, being an EF2 and now holds the record for being the NORTHERN MOST DECEMBER TORNADO EAST OF THE ROCKIES. The ten tornadoes set a record for Decem – ber Wisconsin tornadoes, which surpassed the previous record of 5 tornadoes in December 1970, It was noted that tornado records have only been kept since 1950. Of the ten tornadoes on Decem – ber 15, four were in Clark County and two in Chippewa County – Stanley and Lake Wissota. I'm not sure that being the home of the "Northern Most Tornado East of the Rockie Mountains," is something you put on a sign welcoming people to your commu nity, but it is an interesting bit of history. *** I recently received this and it seems worth sharing. "A Little Boy and the Old Man" – Said the little boy, "Sometimes I drop my spoon.” Said the old man, “I do that too.” The little boy whispered, “I wet my pants.” “I do that too,” laughed the little old man. Said the little boy, "I often cry." The old man nodded, "So do I." "But worst of all," said the boy, "it seems grown-ups don't pay attention to me." And he felt the warmth of a wrinkled old hand. "I know what you mean," said the little old man. (Cred –

*** According to the Lions Clubs International Foundation: 2.2 billion people worldwide have vision impairment or blindness; nearly one-third of young teens worldwide have recently experi – enced bullying; weather-related disasters have grown more than 50% over the last 40 years; each day, 300 people die from mea – sles; 1 in 11 people has diabetes; 300,000 children aged 0-19 are diagnosed with cancer each year; 1 in 9 people lacks enough food to be healthy and active; by 2025, half the world's population will live in water-stressed areas. The world and the Stanley Lions need members to help fight these battles. Contact any Lion for information on membership.

*** On March 11, 2022, global leaders will convene with Lions at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City to discuss the important work being done by Lions and other non-govern mental organizations. This year’s non-governmental theme is "Non-Governmental Impact on Global Health." *** Having been involved in city government for a good number of years, I have a keen ear whenever the finances of the state and local government are in the news. The recent announcement that the non-partition Legislative Fiscal Bureau is projecting a Wis – consin budget surplus of $3.8 billion is likely to set off another round of arguments between the governor and the legislature, both of whom would like bragging rights for the large surplus and how it is to be spent. I am suggesting it is time that local governments receive some of the surplus for roadways and in – frastructure. And then let the legislature and the governor both brag!!

*** Did you know? Taylor County is planning on having full-time ambulance crews in Medford, Rib Lake and Gilman 12 hours a day. Additional hours would be filled with on-call and volunteer EMTs. With the difficulty of recruiting volunteers continuing and the need for advanced training for EMT's, county wide am –

bulance service is gaining supporters in many areas. +++ The February 10, issue of this newspaper carried the obituary of Vir – ginia Ustianowski, a Lublin resident, who taught school several years in the Stanley-Boyd School System, before many years in the Owen-Withee Schools. To honor this woman, Dorothy Ha – lida and members of the Lublin 4-H Club, are proposing that a Little Library be constructed in Lublin. Approval of the Village of Lublin Board is being sought and the location remains to be determined.

*** Attendance at a Super Bowl is for the rich? The majority of football fans watch the Super Bowl on TV and endure $7 million dollar 30 second ads. Here are a few 2022 Super Bowl Facts in case you want to know: SoFi Stadium, located just outside Los Angles, opened 16 months ago and seats 70,240, but expand ed to 100,240 for the Super Bowl. It is the home of the Rams and Chargers. The cheapest seats per SeatGEEK were $4,114 and the most expensive is $7,172. Scalpers reportedly got even more for seats. Attendance was projected to be 65 percent Rams fans. *** Considering that ticket prices in 2022 ranged from $4,114 to $7,172 it's worth taking a look at the price of tickets when the Packers played in their Super Bowl appearances. At the first Su – per Bowl in 1967, it was the Packers vs Chiefs and tickets were $12, which adjusted for inflation would be $90 today. In 1968, Packers vs Raiders tickets were $12 and they would be $87 today considering an inflation adjustment. In 1997, in the Packers vs Patriots game tickets were $275 and adjusted for inflation would be $426 today. In 1998, in the Packers vs. Broncos game tickets were $275 and adjusted for inflation would be $420 today. And finally in 2011, in the Packers vs the Steelers game tickets were $1,200 and adjusted for inflation would be $1,344 today. So, t icket prices have definitely gone up and considering a need to travel to a game (airfare) and living while away from home, it does amount to big bucks! *** Smile time.
