It might be closed for now, but Chapman Park Campground will have a new host when it opens later this spring. The council acting in regular session at the Monday, Feb. 16 council meeting hired Dean Polar for the new post, motion to hire made by Ward 2 Alderperson Jason Meyer seconded by Wards 1 and 8 Alderperson Ben Wald.
Meyer explaining what went into the hiring recommendation.
“So we had two interviews scheduled for this,” he said of campground host. “Dean was the only one who showed up on time for his interview. He has experience last year being a host at an 81-unit campground I believe in Tennessee. And so his experience with a campground much larger than ours, both Joe and I thought he was well qualified for the position.”
The new post with start date no later than May 18 includes $400 biweekly pay runs through October, averaging 20 to 25 hours per week. Polar will work with campers to welcome and confirm registration among other duties, as well as performing light upkeep tasks at the campground.
“So he’s going to cover the season?” Wards 1 and 8 Alderperson Mark Fitzsimmons asked.
“As of now, yes,” Meyer said. “There’s a possibility he might have to leave sometime in September.”
Also in news from Feb. 16 was an update to rules and regulations, with reservations now required three business days in advance along with payment half down at booking and the other half paid ahead of time or with the campground host at check-in.
“The only thing that changed is the registration part of it,” deputy city clerk Maggie Keeku said for campground regulations. “We noticed last year that we would get people who would ask for a reservation on a Thursday and I would already have somebody in the site. So that made it a little wacky last year. So the only thing that we put on there was a couple guidelines with reservations. Everything else is the same. Joe (Schmitt) updated the map so the sites that are ‘tent only’ changed, but just in number and not location.”
Motion to approve the updates to campground rules and regulations was made by Ward 4 to 7 and 9 Alderperson Laurie Foster, seconded by Wald to approve the update.
