With spring sports fast drawing to a close and regionals and sectionals all that’s left, the scores are in for Neillsvilled and Marshfield. With collective team score fo 203 at Neillsville and 396 at Marshfield, Coach Devon Wenndt shared some thoughts on the week’s scorecard.
“Our boys had a rough day in Neillsville,” Wenndt said. “It was an extremely hot day, the first time this year we have had the opportunity to play in conditions like that. I think a few of them were caught by surprise by things like the ball flying further, and the sun draining them of their energy.”
As to River’s Edge at Marshfield May 13, Wenndt said in part that it was a demanding course which didn’t disappoint.
“I knew that RiverEdge in Marshfield was going to play tough, and it didn’t disappoint in that regard,” he said of the challenges faced by the Oriole boys team at Marshfield. “It is a very demanding course where things can go sideways quickly if you aren’t hitting the ball where you are looking.” With a back nine significantly larger than the front, Wenndt said that the course “typically plays 2-4 shots more divcult.” At the same time there was a tip of the hat.
“Tip of the cap to Dominic Rauetto managing his way around that back 9 in 42 shots, one of the best scores posted on that side for the day,” Wenndt said. “The number I had in mind when we got to the course that day was to break 400, and we accomplished that.” With lots of encouraging signs for the match on May 17 at Black River Falls, Marshfield, Wenndt looked forward to the weeks to come.
“I think the most encouraging thought is that there has been a somewhat steady level of improvement throughout the year, but we haven’t had a match yet where everyone has brought their best stuu. Hopefully we can accomplish that in the next couple of weeks,” he said.
