The high school gym at Stanley-Boyd High School will see a remodel, following approval for up to $350,000 in costs at the Jan. 26 school board meeting.
Dating to the school’s construction at the start of the 1960s, the high school gym features regular sporting events, music concerts, and plays, among other uses. Paid for with Fund 46 dollars, the remodel would seek to retrofit an existing space for district needs as opposed to building new, in view of the results from the rejected referendum earlier last year.
Past school board meetings have previously expressed the need for remodel, including in rationale the way that the current drop ceiling tiles present a challenge for sports like volleyball, in which a spike or two can dislodge the roofing. Making the space more acoustic friendly for concerts is also among reasons.
Included in the cost breakdown for a remodel are demo of the existing ceiling, demo and installation of gym lighting, painting above the existing ceiling, stage curtain placement, stage lighting, gym and stage audio, sound baffles for better acoustics, and choral risers.
After reviewing the various options, motion was made by Lance Carlson and seconded by Denise Hoffstatter to approve a gym remodel budget not to exceed $350,000, authorizing district superintendent Jeff Koenig to enter into contracts over and above a $20,000 authorization limit for each individual project.
Also from Monday’ meeting, board members heard from about district office concept design proposals. The office relocation meant to improve school security would see the district office move alongside the pool area (the office is currently in the middle of the building) with three separate options presented to the board. A public information meeting will be held Feb. 17 at 6:00 p.m. in the high school library to give a chance for community feedback. Each of the three designs is provisional and meant to align with expressed public interest in improving school safety and other features within the existing finances for the district.
Last in news from January school board are personnel changes, with Karen Gadke and Linda Lewallen hired for food service following the resignation of Kelsey Galetka as cook.
Also listed in resignations was Jake Fitzsimmons as assistant cross country coach.
As for other coaching announcements, Chris Krajacic will be middle school football coach, with Jeff Trunkel an assistant baseball coach and Tyler Ewer and David Hugh as volunteer baseball coaches. Peter Place will be an assistant track coach and Bryce France will be a volunteer track coach.
