The end of an Oriole sports era came quietly Monday, as Jeff Koenig stepped down as Orioles head football coach.
Koenig, who took over as head coach in 2004 after Coach Jim Brinker stepped down, has spent 21 seasons as head coach at Stanley-Boyd.
The news was contained under consent agenda item 4.3 on the school board agenda, which listed Koenig among sports coach resignations.
Koenig shared thoughts on his coaching career.
“I have been truly blessed to coach in the best school district and community in the world,” he said. “Over these 21 years, I’ve had the honor of working with incredible players, dedicated coaches, and supportive parents and community members who have made this journey unforgettable. I am deeply grateful for the relationships built, lessons learned, and memories created along the way. Thank you to everyone who has supported our program and been part of this amazing experience.”
Board member Ryan Lewallen also shared thoughts on the occasion.
“I just want to take a second to thank Mr. Koenig for coaching our football team,” he said. “Thank you for coaching the game of football, our players, and also showing them how to be really good students. You’ll be greatly missed on the sidelines.” Koenig listened and smiled as the tribute was made.
Motion was then made by Toni Seidl and seconded by Lewallen to approve the consent agenda with Koenig’s resignation as head football coach
