Dear Editor: Last Sunday night, during the holiday weekend, our mother was brought to Aspirus Stanley Hospital’s emergency department. Not only was she having chest pain, but, at times, she had a non-life sustaining heart rate as well. Dr. Pollock and nurses Liz and Barb were excellent. They, along with the imaging, lab and other hospital teams, responded and followed all the protocol that would be completed in a larger facility – only it was happening right here, close to home.

Knowing hospital beds and staff are so scarce throughout the area, we could only wonder, “Where will our mother be transferred?” Her cardiologist was at a nearby hospital, but there were no beds in the PCU or ICU at that time. After talking with a hospitalist at the facility where our mother recently had another heart procedure, we were able to see our mother transfer to where she needed to go. It was a welcome sight later that night when the Aspirus MedEvac team rolled in. We were able to say, “Mom, your chariot has arrived.” We are so happy to say that she arrived home today, after placement of a permanent pacemaker.

THANK YOU to all the great staff members at Aspirus Stanley Hospital for being there for our mother and for all of the other patients needing care in our surrounding area. We are truly grateful and want everyone to know if you don’t already – we are lucky to have a Critical Access Hospital in our community. Never take for granted a resource that many people would love to have available where they live.
