Meeting on Monday, January 10, the Stanley Lions heard reports on two successful Community Service Projects that were completed in December. Lion Dave Winkler reported that this year the deer hides collected surpassed last year thanks to hides collected at Express Mart, from Inge’s Custom Meat Processing and Zais’s Meat and Locker Plant in Boyd. The hides collected should bring appropriately $3,000 for the Lions Camp at Rosholt, that is open free of charge to Stanley-Boyd students with challenges. He thanked those who helped with the project and all the hunters who donated hides this year. Lion Duane Booth reported on the Spirit of Christmas gifts project that served 46 families in the Stanley/Boyd area this year. This was down from the 57 families who received Christmas gifts last year. The gifts were due to the generosity of contributors to the Spirit of Christmas Project. Lions Booth, thanked those who assisted with the transportation of the gifts to Stanley and the distribution that took place at the Stanley Fire Station. Support was expressed for continuation of this project in Stanley, under the auspices of the Lions Club. Lion Winkler also reported on another successful Christmas Raffle and thanked all those who sold the tickets and those who purchased them. All drawings again took place at Bob Valk’s Barber Shop and the winners have been announced in the local newspaper. Lion Lorena McLoone reported on a successful Grand Opening of the Community Center. Fundraisers that evening by the Lions provided over $600 of income for the event. Lion Ben Isenberger reported that the plastic recycling project is going well, with an estimate that over 150 pounds have already been collected. The end result will be the community receiving a bench for each 500 pounds collected. And better yet, the plastic does not end up in the landfill but is recycled. Anyone interested in learning more, or contributing plastic, can contact any Lion. Lion Isenberger also reported that on Monday, January 17, there will be a presentation to the Stanley City Council on the bike path project that the Lions are helping spearhead. Due to a Lions application the Cenex Cooperative has contributed $5,000 to the project. Under New Business, Lion Dave Jankoski, in the absence of President Jim Jones, conducted the meeting and announced that the 27-E1 District Governor, Bill Anderson, will be making his annual visit to a joint meeting of the Boyd and Stanley Lions Clubs on Wednesday, February 9. The meeting will be held at the Boyd Legion Hall with a 6 pm social and a 7 pm dinner. A monetary gift was voted to the District Governor’s designated Lions project. During Acting Treasurer Norm Christianson’s report it was voted to contribute a total of $1,200 to the Parade of Checks at the District Convention to be held this year in Superior on March 25 and 26. The March 14 meeting will return to Debbie’s on Broadway.
