Area businesses will have the opportunity to come and learn during a free Business Expansion And Retention (BEAR) event to be held at Martino’s on Tuesday May 24 from 11:30 to 1 p.m. With 13 seats still open as of Monday, those interested in signing up for the free lunch and learn may do so through the Chippewa County Economic Development Corporation, one of the sponsors for the event.

“They (the EDC) handle that end,” Support to Communities project coordinator Nicole Lillis said of sign up for the free May 24 event at Martino’s. The number for the EDC is 715-723-7150, information available at [email protected] But on that note, just what is a lunch and learn exactly?

“A lunch and learn is an opportunity for area businesses and interested parties to learn more about a particular program or initiative that may otherwise be unknown to them,” Nicole Lillis said as Project Coordinator for Support to Communities (STC), which businesses can learn about at May 24 event. Among the things that STC focuses on are:

• Assistance with Mental Health and AODA Out-Patient services FREE EVENT

• Career planning, including job preparation, skills assessment, and resume writing

• Financial assistance for skill, and upskill training in eligible professional programs

• Financial assistance with other supportive services Being held to educate people about the STC program and help employers and employees of small business with information on having an employee assistance program, the event will have a number of participating partners, including the Chippewa County Economic Development Corporation (CCEDC), Workforce Resource, Martino’s, Forward Bank, and Stand Against Meth, the last which appeared in fall 2019 at the Stanley-Boyd High School prior to the pandemic.

While not a main feature of the May 24 event at Martino’s, the impact of meth in Chippewa County along with the need for having resources to counter it, can be important. Stanley Police Chief Lance Weiland has more to share on the matter “Quite honestly, meth right now is more prevalent than THC and marijuana,” referring to the area. “We do live in a safe community, in a small town, but there are people using and selling wheter you know it or not," he said of meth and its euect on local businesses. Chief Weiland hoped to have a representative at the May 24 lunch and learn as well, the Stand Against Meth campaign a task force partner in the Chippewa Valley.
