Local farmers step up for one of their own

Local Colburn resident Vern Schofield and his wife, Cathy, experienced a tragedy that opened their eyes to the kindness of neighbors. On Nov. 18, Vern was doing maintenance on his shed roof at his farm north of Boyd when he fell off the 25-foot roof breaking two ribs, his wrists, a toe, having a severe concussion and tearing his kidney. Things looked bleak for the Boyd farmer. He had started combining corn but now it looked like that would have to wait. That’s when his neighbors stepped in.

Hearing about his misfortune and knowing that time was running out, local neighbor Matt Holub decided to help. Holub reached out to other farmers in the area and on Nov. 22 Vern and Cathy saw a heartwarming sight. Holub, Don Klisiewicz, Jamie Close and crew, Carl and Stephanie Seidlitz, and the Danielsons all showed up to help combine corn and haul it. But the kindness doesn’t stop there. Along with the Schofield’s sons and grandsons, neighbor Dave Acker helped cut firewood for the winter while the others combined the corn.

Vern and Cathy, who had lived on their farm since 1982, have been drivers for their Amish neighbors for over twenty years. On Dec. 7 over twenty of their local Amish neighbors came and finished the work that Vern had begun by finishing the shed, including Daniel Mast, Levi Mast, Yancy Walters, Matt Walters, Alvin Yutze, Rueben Herfhberger, Henry Raber, Willie Gingrich, Freeman Stutzman, Jerry Stutzman, Roman Borntreger.

Vern and Cathy are grateful for the help and support of their family, friends and community members as Vern is on the road to recovery. “It was great,” Vern shared of how he felt when he heard the news. Cathy agreed, “I’m thankful that everyone could pitch in and help.” She shared that the support was overwhelming. “It was kind of nice to hear that you have people that will pitch in and help. I don’t think any of them will ever know how much it helped.” Cathy expressed her thankfulness to those who helped, “I want to thank you. We appreciate it very much.”
