Oriole girls persevere through tough season

Now with a 5-10 record, the Oriole girls headed to Regis Thursday, Jan. 9, coming away with a 32-51 loss against the Ramblers, later competing against Bloomer for a 27-73 finish in the Blackhawks favor.
Orioles Head Coach Ryan Wundrow shared more on Regis and Bloomer after results.
“We have been improving and taking steps forward,” Wundrow said. “The girls are embracing their roles and playing hard. We just happened to play some really good teams in Regis and Bloomer. We really competed against Regis and started the game with a seven point lead. We strung some really good minutes of basketball together against them, some of the best of our season. Regis made some good runs we were unable to stop with some needed buckets. We are beginning to handle pressure better and our young ball handlers are gaining valuable experience. Again versus Bloomer we played very well for the first four minutes of the game. Bloomer’s speed and athleticism caught up to us and they were able to go on some long runs that we couldn’t answer. Going forward we need to decrease our bad turnovers that lead directly to easy points for the other team. On the flip side of that we need to get more defensive stops that lead to easy points for us. Good basketball teams score in transition so we hope that shows up for us in the future games.”
As for highlighting individual players, Wundrow chose several players.
“Three freshmen lead us in three point shooting percentage,” he said. “Caitlen Ketterhagen, Kendall Sikora, and Stella Chwala are all shooting near 30 percent for the season. Bailey Sikora, Junior, is shooting close to 25%. Kendall and Caitlen also handling the ball for us and gaining valuable experience. They have worked hard on becoming good basketball players and it shows. The young Orioles have a very bright future. Syleen Seichter’s effort stands out when you watch us play. Many opposing coaches have commented on her effort and she embraces the challenge of playing defense and rebounding against much larger players.”
Now ranked sixth in the Western Cloverbelt, the Orioles play Fall Creek Thursday at Fall Creek. Game start is 7:15 p.m.
