The Oriole boys and girls track and field team competed at Bloomer Thursday, May 1. The girls team placed first while the boys took second, nine team competing in all.
Highlight for the day was a new record, replacing one set 45 years ago.
Competing at Bloomer in the 4x100 relay, the Oriole girls relay team finished in 52.66, breaking the old record of 54.0. The new record was set by Jocelyn Hager, Macie LaGrander, Lula Chwala, and Addyson Gustafson.
“These girls are running fast in these relays,” Head Coach Bob Seidl said. “It’s not often that you have four fast girls that have an opportunity to break records that have stood for 45 years.” Seidl went on to say that the 4x100 record holders would also go for the 4x200 school record, set last year.
As for Bloomer results generally, Seidl said there are still several boys out with injuries, which meant caution before returning to active participation.
Weather, meanwhile, was not a factor.
“Almost ideal conditions,” Seidl said of the weather at Bloomer.
Looking ahead to conference, Seidl said the girls team had depth.
“The girls won the meet at Bloomer with a lot of third and fifth places,” he said. “That shows that they have a lot of depth. We’ll need that at the Conference Meet.”
There was still room to improve, however.
“I’d say that at this point in the season we are doing alright in the running events but need to place higher in the field events,” he said. “We have to improve in the month of May.”
As for the boys, injuries loomed large.
“We placed second without loading our sprints,” Seidl said. “Durand won the meet and they will be the host of our Sectional Meet. Rib Lake placed third and Cadott placed fourth.” The top sprinters on the boys team have a few leg and hamstring issues. “They are feeling better but are not eager to rush back into competition,” Seidl said.
Notable events for the boys included Deon Clingonsmith in the 400 with a time of 54.72.
“He is really bringing that 400 time down,” Coach Seidl said.
Also of note was Jesse Allard’s second place finish in pole vault.
“Jesse Allard also placed 2nd in the Pole Vault,” Seidl said. “He is picking up the pole vault technique very fast. He jumped 9’6” and almost made 10 feet.”
The track and field team competed Tuesday at Abbotsford, a home meet scheduled for Friday, May 9.
Meet start time is 4:45 p.m.
