The Oriole boys varsity is on a roll. Playing Regis Thursday, May 29 at Carson Park, the boys varsity came away with a 13-2 win against the Ramblers. Much of the action happened in the third inning, where the Orioles scored 9 runs.
The Orioles and Regis both came away scoreless in the first, before things opened in the second, Josiah Demske batted in by Dayne Trunkel. The Orioles kept Regis controlled with pitching by Dawson Ewer and by preventing the bases getting loaded, leaving the score 1-0 as the third inning dawned—and that’s where the magic began.
Loading the bases with a series of hits, walks, and stolen bases, the Orioles set up a winning strategy to bring the runs home, Alex Williams and Landon Ewer each knocked in one while Jackson Gindt batted two in off a double. Dawson Ewer got a single, while Landon Ewer came in on a walk by Demske. Trunkel went to first on a hit, leading to Koebin Wundrow crossing home plate. Regis showed its frustration at this by changing pitchers even as Williams made a double to bring Demske and Dawson Ewer home. Landon Ewer then batted a double to bring more home. By the end of it all nine runs had been added to the scoreboard, bringing things 10-0 Orioles.
With Regis still scoreless in the bottom of the third, the Orioles worked to advance their lead in the fourth, but were held in check by the Ramblers. The Orioles kept their defense on with two pop flies caught by Storm Tiry and Gindt in quick succession over the bottom of the fifth, bringing two outs.
Then things turned hot.
A Regis player hit a double off a drive right field, while an overthrow to home base saw Dawson Ewer cover as the catcher went for the ball. Ewer was knocked to the ground from behind by a Regis player coming in from third, sustaining a bloody left elbow. The run with no slide was ruled in Regis’ favor on the claim of obstruction, while Ewer left the game with an elbow wrap for evaluation, returning in the sixth inning. Regis scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth as Williams replaced Ewer on the mound. But while things got rough and a player was ejected the Orioles were able to rally and hold it together, adding three runs before game end to bring the score 13-2 Orioles.
Orioles Varsity Head Baseball Coach Ryan Sturm shared more after the game.”
“I thought it was a really fun game to play in and a great environment,” he said of Carson Park May 29. “Our players were ready to play and they played their best defensive game of the year. It was the first time this year that we had no errors and that was the difference in the game. Dawson pitched great and we got a lot of clutch hits. It was awesome.”
The Orioles advanced from their win against Regis to play number 3 Stratford at Stratford on Monday, June 2, finishing with their season against the Tigers 0-10 with a 7-14 overall season record.
