Traveling to Minneapolis Saturday for a conference game with the Thorp Cardinals, the Oriole boys varsity soared high, defeating Thorp 63-52 in an afternoon game at the Target Center. Senior Point Forward and Center Henry Hoel marked 1,000 career points overall at the Saturday game, the third player in Stanley-Boyd history to earn the distinction.
Starting out with the tip off in Thorp’s favor, the Orioles soon took the lead, sinking shots by Haydn Gustafson, Riley Weltzin, and Hoel, among others. Orioles Head Coach Dakota Nichols shared some thoughts after the score sheets were tallied.
“The boys did a great job of letting the game come to them, not forcing the action,” he said. "We scored very efficiently and played great help defense.” As to Hoel’s achievement, Nichols had the following to say.
“Henry scored his 1,000th point, becoming the third player in school history to do it. It’s very cool to see an athlete’s hard work and dedication pay off,” he said. “We are all very proud of him.” Hoel scored 25 points in all during the game, including 4 two pointers and 1 three pointer in the first half, followed with 6 two pointers and 1 free throw in the second.
Also contributing to Saturday’s win with points scored were Haydn Gustafson, Landen Karlen, Logan Gray, JJ Heller, Jackson Gindt, Riley Weltzin and Riley Schad.
With Saturday’s win against Thorp the team now stands at 5-6 overall and 3-2 in conference. Prior to Saturday they played Arcadia at home for a 71-67 finish.
They next play against McDonell Central Friday Jan. 5 at McDonell, following an away game Tuesday against Durand-Arkansaw.
