Now in session, the girls varsity basketball season opened for the Orioles Nov. 19 against St. Croix Central, the girls varsity falling to the Panthers 20-62 in an away game.
Traveling to Barron Friday Nov. 22 to play the Barron Golden Bears, the Orioles improved their game, the final score 37-41 in the Golden Bears favor. Orioles Head Coach Ryan Wundrow shared thoughts after the game.
“Saint Croix Central was a very good team that will contend in a very good Middle Border Conference,” he said. “They played very fast and shot the ball very well. We need to do a better job of taking care of the ball and having less careless turnovers.
As for Barron, Wundrow shared the following
“We competed well against Barron. We were down by 10 in the first half and battled back in the second half to take a small lead. We were just unable to hit some shots at the end of the game and they made some free throws. That game was in our sights. Two less turnovers and three made free throws and we would have won that game. We shot the ball much better against Barron and were led by Bailey Sikora, Kendall Sikora, Lula Chwala and Caitlen Ketterhagen. We need to improve in the areas that will win us games. Getting to the free throw line and making free throws will win us games. Taking care of the ball and turning the ball over less than 20 percent of the time will keep us competitive.”
The Orioles play Fall Creek Friday, Dec. 6 at Stanley-Boyd High School. Game start is 7:15 p.m.
