THE LARGER

Council roundup

The Stanley Council has met with members of the different community organizations, and the verdict is to grant five years of use without for those who contributed to the building of the new Community Center.

The agreement only holds for organizations rather than individual members, and the organizations have to tell the city at year’s start when they need the building reserved. The two dates that will remain the same and are ‘off limits’ as such for other use are the Rodeo and Watermelon Fest each year.

“I think that’s pretty good,” Frank Dusick of the Sportsman’s Club said, as it was agreed by all that maybe things were being made a little harder than they needed to be in terms of use. “The point of donating was to get it up and running,” Dusick said, while Dean Samuelson of the Rod and Gun Club and Lions representatives were also present, along with the Rodeo.

The use of the Community Center as a potential Red Cross site also came up as well, with local Red Cross coordinator said that the Boyd Legion almost cancelled last year and that the Boyd school was a potential backup. Churches, while a good place, are often hard to book on Christmas Eve, so that the size of the Community Center would be sufficient to house the Red Cross Blood Drive. Any development in that area would be a matter of further talking and discussion.

••••• Also at Monday night’s meeting was an update by Library Director Elizabeth Miniatt, who informed the Council that the Library Board had held annual officer elections, with the result that little had changed. Cathy Ryba is Board President, Cheryl Kern-Simirenko is the board vice president, Jim Erickson is Board Treasurer and Andrea Slowiak is Board Secretary. For more on library happenings, see Director Miniatt’s column on page 9 this week.

••••• In terms of Well 10 at Monday night’s meeting, the Council or ‘City Board’ as it’s now called on the municipal website approved expenditure of “up to $35,000” to replace the deficient wellhead, with the extra expense due to investing in stainless steel, hoped to last from 3 to four times longer than its now pitted and decayed forbear, soon to be replaced. The need for Council approval beforehand comes as the city only has around three days from bid to decide if it wants to buy, rather than the two weeks to a Council meeting.

••••• Last but not least and only tacitly related to the City, you may have noticed the corn stalk photo on the front page. Now replaced with an orange cone, the stalk was well established, while a smaller one on the roadside nearby was untouched as of Monday afternoon. It just goes to show, that corn will grow anywhere, given the proper elements. That’s all for this week.
