The City of Stanley Council moved quickly Monday evening as they approved three major purchases and added new employees.
Soo Line Depot Pavilion
As council member Holly Kitchell abstained and council member Joe Davison was absent, the council approved the Soo Line Depot building proposal to replace the former depot damaged by the Dec. 15, 2021 tornado. With the proposal priced at $250,800.00 from Schneider Building, the new 1,800-square-foot one-story building will be located at 281 E. First Ave. near Emery Street. Designed to evoke the past with a new structure, the building will have pavilions on either sidemeasuring 20 feet by 26 feet. In addition to outdoor pavilion space, it will house men’s and women’sbathrooms with a baby changing station in both and a mechanical room. The original community landmark was built in the 1900s and was part of the Wisconsin Central Railroad before it was closed in 1968. The new pavilion will likely commemorate the former depot in its new construction withcollaboration from the Stanley Historical Society.
Wastewater Department
The common council unanimously approved the hire of Jacob Lukes as an Operator in the Wastewater Department at the wage of $27.50 per hour effective Aug. 28. Lukes was previously employed with the City of Stanley in the Public Works Department.
Council member Jason Meyer commented, “This gentleman is qualified for this position, and we need a second person at the wastewater treatment plant.”
The council also unanimously voted to purchase a new 2023 Ram 1500 4WD truck for theWastewater Department at the cost of $43,246.00 with the sale of the current 2019 truck possibly going towards trade in value.
Police Department
The Stanley Common Council unanimously voted to approve the purchase of a new Ford SportUtility Vehicle for the Police Department at $45,078. The 2024 Explorer Police Interceptor will replacethe current 2017 squad, which has recently been out of service for repairs, thus posing a problem forthe Police Department. Chief Lance Weiland plans to submit the order for the 2024 Explorer soon, with hopes to be included in the first batch of production.

Stanley resident, Ryan Lewallen was approved by the council to bow hunt for white tail deer on city-owned property southweest of the Historical Society from Sept. 16 to Jan. 7, 2024.
Beginning Aug. 28, Tracey Kaszubowski will work part time at the Stanley City Hall as an administrative assistant account clerk.
