Paraprofessionals are often called the unsung heroes of the classroom, providing essential support that allows teachers to meet diverse student needs more effectively. Paraprofessional support can boost both academic and behavioral outcomes by offering individualized guidance and reinforcing learning. Specifically in 4K classrooms, paraprofessionals play a vital role, where children are building the foundations for their entire educational journey. At this early age, students benefit greatly from small-group support, individualized attention, and extra help with social and emotional skills. By joining the Stanley-Boyd School District team this August, Alyssa Gerrits is already making a difference in the lives of the youngest Stanley-Boyd 4K learners.
Gerrits lives in Cadott with her husband Ken and their two children, Annabel (9) and Bryce (8). “We have a black lab as well,” she shared. The family recently relocated from Salem, Wisconsin, and they’ve been enjoying their new community. Outside of school, Gerrits also stays active in local events, helping with the Stanley Rodeo where her husband Ken serves as chairman.
In her free time, Gerrits and her family love spending time together in the outdoors. “We love spending time together up north at my parents’ cabin, go for bike rides, camping and hunting,” she said. Sports had always been part of Gerrits’ life. In school, she played soccer and was on the swim team and now she spends her time cheering on her two children as they participate in soccer and swimming.
Her journey to becoming a paraprofessional started close to home. “Last year I went into both of my childrens’ classes and helped out their teachers and I really enjoyed it!”
Starting a new role always comes with challenges. “My hardest challenge was probably learning all the kids’ names. It took a couple weeks, but I got them! I’m still learning all the other 4K students’ names that aren’t in the classroom I’m in,” she said.
What Gerrits enjoys most is clear. “I love forming relationships with the kids and hearing from them that they missed me over the weekend,” she shared.
Gerrits also says Stanley-Boyd’s supportive environment has made the transition smooth. “I wanted to work at Stanley Boyd because I’ve heard nothing but great things about the school district! Everyone has made me feel very welcome! They’re always very willing to help me if I have a question!”
When asked what she’s most excited for this school year, Gerrits said, “Watching the 4K students learn and grow!”
Paraprofessionals are more than just classroom helpers—they’re mentors, cheerleaders, and an essential part of the school family. In the Stanley-Boyd 4K program especially, these dedicated staff members help young learners feel safe, encouraged, and excited to come to school each day. Their patience, creativity, and caring spirit make a lasting impression. Stanley-Boyd is proud to have such passionate paraprofessionals who go above and beyond to make a difference. With her enthusiasm, caring nature and love for learning, Gerrits is a wonderful addition to the Stanley-Boyd staff and an important part of the 4K students’ day.
